Within seconds, the air beneath the mask falls to 17.5 for oxygen content, when OSHA requires a minimum reading of 19.5 oxygen for a safe working environment. This lowered level triggered the "unsafe" air alarm on the device.

This occurred without exertion -moving around, walking, carrying items etc. all negatively increase air quality.

Both the homemade mask w/ half paper towel folded 2x inside, and N95 make me lightheaded after 5-7mins, but all stores around here require masks to get inside.

I have COPD, but can’t get a “note from my Dr”, as I have two other underlying conditions: Congestive Heart Failure and Type 1 Diabetes. Doc wants me to wear a mask.

While interesting and helpful, the blood oxygen level in the body is the important reading.

Well, I guess when I get light-headed after a short while in Walmart it’s not just my imagination.

I just hyperventilate prior to masking.

So amazing! For 150 years tens of millions have worn masks without problems, so glad they found there actually are problems. Now, let’s go spread the virus and really show them!

He's measuring the percent oxygen in his exhaled air that lingers in the small space between the mask and face between breaths. The sensor isn't quick enough to pick up the higher concentration of oxygen during inhalation.

If he stuck the tube down into his trachea, he would get the same results with no mask.

A great new product idea would be an airline travel hood. It would attach a hose to the overhead air vent and feed a plastic bag that the passenger would then place over their head and secure around their neck. It would have some air holes at the bottom to allow airflow which would be covered by a filter to prevent droplets from escaping.

Of course if the pilot cycles the power the air duct would shut down and everyone would suffocate but until then it would be totally safe.

How do surgeons wear masks for hours then without becoming dangerously lightheaded?

How do the Taiwanese, Japanese, and Koreans manage wearing masks so often?

I have carried bags of heavy groceries up 2 flights of stairs while wearing a mask. No problems breathing.

What’s more important, your momentary discomfort or stopping the second wave of CV from derailing Trump’s chances of a second term?

This is where a some facial hair comes in handy (males only, I hope) if you want to defeat a good seal. Not recommended for truly hazardous environments.

Still more oxygen than an airline passenger!

I think the premise of this thread is nonsense. More important than whatever oxygen level is measured underneath a mask is the %SpO2 level of the wearer of the mask. If the %SpO2 is measured as adequate, then there is no problem.

It just so happens that I have a pulse oximeter and have measured my %SpO2 while sitting with both a mask on and off. The readings under both conditions range from 92% to 96%. Because I’m sitting at a mile high elevation, 92% is the minimum adequate %SpO2.

I live in Northern Virginia and every morning on my way to work I see numerous people driving by themselves with masks on and windows rolled up. Not only that, I would say that more than half the people out jogging are wearing masks as well. I do have to put on a mask to shop and I can’t wait to get outside to rip it off. I can’t imagine exercising with a mask on.
