The Three Gorges Dam is one of the biggest if not the biggest gravity dam in the world. China is currently seeing record flooding, with three-four days of rain still in the future for the area around the dam.
When the dam was under construction, they asked foreign consultants to come in and inspect the dam. The consultants noted poor concrete quality and insufficient rebar supports. The Chinese then kicked the consultants out and called them racist.
A good video of the extent of the flooding.
The dam itself has taken damage from a 2012 earthquake and is now currently stressed. If it were to break, millions of lives could be at stake, especially since a huge amount of power is wired through the dam, thus, if it breaks during the night, people could be making a blind rush into the dark and into a wall of water.
Agreed...I see no chance of a preemptive strike on that dam or anything else in the PRC at this point.
That bridge collapse was caused by an engineer that didn’t know what the blank they were doing(she).
HAHA!! Love it. Thanks for getting that stuck in my head.
When you think that all building materials from China have been inferior quality and she even banned, you’d have to believe that this dam will not hold for long!
I’m pretty sure that ANY bulge that could be observed from an aerial photo would be more than out of tolerance!
On youtube some guy had drone videos of the two small dams breaking apart last month due to the flooding in Michigan.

20’ tall dam breach (from video on the ground) is pretty impressive/terrible.
I thought the dam was designed to prevent flooding?? Oops.
I am sure it was, but it was also key to power generation developments. All dams have their limits and this years rains have not been seen in decades, making them rare, even if not “unnatural”. While the officials say the dam is safe and not yet storing above the capacity of the reservoir, their explanations also include how much more than can increase the rate of release out of the dam, which surely will affect those downstream of the dam if it comes to that.
While designed to reduce flooding by the Yangtze River itself, that cannot account for over a hundred other rivers in the area, many of which are experiencing flooding.
However, if you look at the river on a larger scale map, it twists and turns a whole bunch of times. And with a major dam failure, the river is just going to bulldoze its way downstream.
Wuhan is down that river.
What of dam failures upstream?
Well, in that case...
... prayin wont do you no good.
I thought that FReepers believed in the power of prayer.
Not when the levee breaks.
Since June, more than 10 million people in 26 provinces have been affected by torrential rain, with many cities above and below the Three Gorges Dam submerged by floodwaters, calling into question the effectiveness and stability of the massive facility.

According to the below article there are more than 90 000 dams/reservoirs, big and small, and the control of the minor ones are not sufficient.

If the rain continues China must either flood cities below the Three Gorges Dam or risk dam collapse. This is the weather forecast:
From Sunday to Monday afternoon, heavy rain and rainstorms are expected in parts of Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei and Hunan, among other regions, the National Meteorological Center said. Some of these regions will see up to 70 mm of hourly precipitation, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, the center said.
China has a four-tier color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue. The center advised local authorities to remain alert for possible flooding, landslides and mudslides, and recommended halting outdoor activities in hazardous areas.

Conclusion: Expect big causalities and two digit impact on the Chinese GNP (normally flood damage is in the region of 1-3 %/year).
“Expect big causalities “
We’ll never be told the real number
... and not my typo as well - casualties ;-)
it was close enough : )

Perhaps the general opinion in China will be that Xi has lost the “Mandate of Heaven”. Will the CCP go down as well?
