ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has officially claimed another victim.
The 49th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta has been postponed until October 2-10, 2021, which means the 50th event fiesta will now be pushed back until 2022.
The decision was made Monday by the all-volunteer Balloon Fiesta board of directors.
Matt Guthrie, president of the board, said in a statement, The safety of our pilots, guests, sponsors, staff and volunteers has always been our top concern and in the wake of COVID-19 and its continued impacts, we must stay dedicated to upholding that commitment.
People who already made reservations and paid for tickets or RV spaces will be able to use those next year.

Plano Balloon Festival cancelled as well. Pretty much everything else in town is going strong.
DemonRats take the air out of everything.
The mess hall is at the central camp and is used by groups on the In-processing day before hitting the trail and then after coming off the trail before they depart for home. I was one of the adults from our troop who took boys on a Philmont backpacking trip in 1995, one of whom was my son. My son returned to Philmont in 1997 and 1998. As you note, once on the trail, its all about using the issued backpacking foods to cook and feed your trail group. Of course, this also means keeping a clean camp to keep the bears out of camp.
Our interactions with other groups was at trail camps with organized Backwoods activities like fishing, gold-panning, mountaineering, etc.
21,000 potential campers scattered along 300+ miles of trails, and they can’t manage social distancing?
Oshkosh cancelled.
I’m glad I went once about 6 years ago.
On my bucket list.

I’m seeing a lot of stuff canceled or ended citing BLM or the pandemic that were on the decline. It is a socially acceptable EXCUSE to do what they wanted to do.
I camped and hiked at Philmont in the 60s. Then it was close to a wilderness experience. Sounds like its gone to shit since then. ORGANIZED ACTIVITIES? GIRLS? Figures, I guess. Sucks to remember what it used to be like to be free.
Sad ...... on Philmont loss. Happy on the balloon loss. Worked Philmont 3 summers after I earned Eagle and later as a Reserve Deputy for Bernalillo worked the balloon festival while stationed at Kirtland AFB.......
