Juneteenth isn’t a date tied to Lincoln. It is when someone from the Union delivered a proclamation in Galveston Texas that the slaves were free. This came after the end of the civil war.
That occurred on June 19th and subsequently that date was celebrated by the black community. It is the oldest and longest running tradition to celebrate the end of slavery.
Thank you for the correction.
The real info seems rather less compelling to me than the proclamation itself!
But, of course, slavery in the United States did not end on June 19. Juneteenth is said to be a celebration about the end of slavery in the Confederate States of America.
And that in this context: The Confederate States of America were defeated by the most powerful slave-owning nation on earth.
exactly, Lincoln is to associated with the Republican party, can't have a holiday associated with the Republican party.
My gut feeling is after the military Emancipation Proclamation that Juneteenth is about, I wonder if they rounded up the free slaves and conscripted them to work for the Union Army. The Union couldn't legally steal the slaves for cheap labor but they could free them and then conscript them to work for the yankees. ;)
