The maker of Eskimo Pies will change the 99-year-old brand name of the ice cream treat, the company said Friday becoming the latest organization to overhaul the marketing of a product with a racially tinged moniker in recent weeks.
The owner of the Eskimo Pie, Dreyers Grand Ice Cream, said in a statement they had been considering renaming the chocolate-covered ice cream bar and popsicle for some time.
We are committed to being a part of the solution on racial equality, and recognize the term is derogatory, the companys head of marketing said in a statement.
This move is part of a larger review to ensure our company and brands reflect our people values, the company added.
Along with the name change, the company will alter the treats marketing scheme, which traditionally featured a young boy dressed as an Eskimo in a snowy environment.

Mao did considerable damage to the Chinese language . My daughter sat down one day with a friend from Taiwan. She showed her the traditional Chinese characters, the Maoist simplified characters, and the loss of nuances and depth of meaning which the simplification caused. Major dumbing down of an entire culture.

Well actually many of the Alaskan tribes consider Eskimo derogatory, and considering the history of the term I understand, the problem is they seem to be only slightly less thrilled with Native Alaskan but how are we to keep track of all their tribes? My question is how many of the 229 tribes that have tribal councils speaking for all of their people have registered complaints over the Eskimo Pie name.
All these companies could just use numbers to identify their products. Such as, you will enjoy a “number 6 ice cream”. Or can numbers also have racial stereotypes? I mean don’t get me started on the number ‘8’..........
