England rugby fans could soon be banned from singing Swing Low, Sweet Chariot at matches because of the song's ties with slavery, it has emerged. The iconic anthem which rings round the stands at Twickenham is being reviewed by the Rugby Football Union, which has launched a wide-ranging probe into racism. Written by a black slave in the American South during the nineteenth century, the song was first belted out by supporters when two black wingers - Martin Offiah and Chris Oti - became sporting heroes on the pitch at the end of the 1980s.

Because, back in the 80s, they had a winger named Martin Offiah , whose nickname was "Chariots" (get it? "Chariots Offiah"? "Chariots of Fire"?)

Anyway, they sang it as tribute to him and it just stuck. Ready for more rugby silliness? This song is mostly sung at one -- count 'em, ONE -- location: The England national team playing in Twickenham. So all of this is about singing of a song, meant to honor a black player, in one match location.

I know a lot about rugby from my experience with David Storey’s play The Changing Room, all about what goes on in that room before during and after a semi-pro game. Rugby fans will NOT be cowed by this “ban”, anymore than rugby players would be.

Wow, that’s a pretty esoteric connection. Rugby fans (at least in Twickenham) seem pretty deep!

The rest of the world needs to stop playing England’s rugby and soccer. It’s cultural misappropriation.

“swing” and “low” and “sweet” and “chariot” are all english words, not african.....they took our language and made a song perhaps, but with the historians of today, possibility becomes fact if it suits the narractive...

I unconsciously whistle when doing mindless tasks at work...

One of the tunes I whistle is Swing Low, Sweet Chariot...

A co-worker asked where I learned it (I don’t come across as a gospel aficionado) - told her - 4th Grade Chorus, public schools were different 50+ years ago...

Oh yeah! We should also ban any non-black person from buying, selling, recording, or in any way owning, singing, visual displays, of black music. it is cultural appropriation and must be banned. Especially the buying selling and owning black music because it is reminiscent of the process of buying , selling, owning of black slaves. It is cultural appropriation and must be stopped now.

AND Soccer. A game invented in Africa by black Africans for black Africans. We must ban the game in its entirety from non-blacks. Only blacks will be allowed to play the game

We need to ban non-whites from the games of football (American) and basketball. Both games invented by whites and where the non-whites are bribed to play and then held to the team by ‘contracts’. another word for forced servitude, i.e., slavery. Just because we do it also to whites does not justify the practice with non-whites.

I know I will get flamed for this.

Negro Spirituals is the one thing that made slavery worth it. The evil of slavery was used to transport blacks so that the compassion of white men to teach them the Gospel so that they could connect with the Creator and abandon Traditional African Religion.

The taking of blacks to this continent created a fork in the road for millions of blacks to hear the Gospel and respond to it to the eternal salvation of their souls. Being translated into a new eternal spiritual family-- although that certainly was not its purpose. The spiritually blind cannot see such things. The Quaker John Wolman was one of the few that got it right and saw it for what it was: a great injustice for sure, but also a great opportunity. Negro Spirituals, now a rich part of Christian hymnody, is now part of the tapestry of a race being woven into the family of God, which compels worship.

In exchange blacks unknowingly gave the white man a gift that sprung from evil: a new and heartfelt way to worship Christ that never would have existed. At the same time our national sin was confronted-- it took 700K dead and 150+ years and counting. But that is the beauty of Christ. He continues to gather his people and He will use whatever sociological eruption to do just that, because He is Sovereign.

I also learned “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” in my public elementary school. I am not that old either. I think it depends on the school district.

“America’s past use of “gator bait” truly is disturbing — reportedly, white men would use African-American babies to lure gators out of swamps so they could hunt them more easily for their skin.”

LOL - some folks down in Florida have been smoking too much dope and telling lies. Apparently the president of the university believes the lies. ROTFL
