When I got my M.A. some years ago, I had to take a course on Latin American culture and specifically chose Peru to do the study. What I found was absolutely stunning. A former professor, Abimael Guzman, had started terrorist group, The Sendero Luminoso, with students and built it into an efficient, ruthless killing machine in a bid to take over the country. One woman who was trying to persuade people to NOT follow him was grabbed by his goons, dragged into the center of town where she lived, and strapped with dynamite. The villagers were told if they kept listening to people like her the same thing was going to happen to them that was about to happen to her. They lit a fuse and blew her to pieces.
The war between the government and this group was horrific. Finally, Alberto Fujimoro (born in Peru to Japanese parents) took control and crushed the rebellion. He would pay later when others who hated his tactics ended up getting him convicted for supposed crimes. You can read about him on the internet. His methodology worked. He stopped a VERY ruthless terrorist group from taking over the country.
We are facing a revolution (not protests) started by academia. I don't know what group is directing all of this, but it IS a coordinated effort. They are using the "useful idiot" students and poor minorities (who just want to steal something) to effect their plan. Thus, you see the mixture of young people at the riots. To repeat, this is NOT protesting, it is the beginning of an attempted revolution. I would surmise that some members of the Democrat Party are behind it and may have brought members of academia into the group in a bid for a total takeover. Unless the government (which has been infiltrated by those who support this movement) stops this with an iron fist, we are only seeing the beginning of this.

I’ve read that too. But in my district (in the old days) book committees were made up of veteran teachers only. No goofy special interest groups. We knew what the kids needed to know. And we knew what worked, and what didn’t.
But as I noted earlier, “educational consultants” now drive everything in my district. Teacher input is not wanted.
No, the educational consultants weren’t bright enough to leave that out on their own.

That is the problem with Houston Independent School District. They will only hire education majors. Yet there are a lot of retired engineers and scientists here, but they are regarded as not knowing anything. And at one college of education, it’s taught that math is white privilege, and “logic and reason is the perpetuation of white cishetero patriarchy”.
Any public school kiddo would in a heartbeat.
If not actively participate, watch with glee while someone else did that.

There is an art to teaching. There really is. How you present a topic to a group of unmotivated high school kids is very different than how you would present that same topic to a group of college majors.
I strongly support using retired engineers and scientists as public school teachers. But without some training, it could be disastrous. I’ve seen that happen!
So what kind of training would be needed? A degree in education? Hell, no! That would pollute their minds. I would suggest instead that they spend a couple of months (yes, months) observing a master teacher in action.
I agree with you that it is not going to get better, at least not until we change the system. My only issue was a minor one with the word “any” - small point, I know.

It depends on where you are, not ever state teacher’s union is the same. Some toe the complete radical education line others less so. Either way they know one depends on the other. They have a political marriage of convenience together they both get money & power. Split apart they know they would be much less successful.

The government is going to have to go after the professors and administrators who are allowing this to happen or you'll end up with another Abimael Guzman. You get a guy like that and the riots will look like musical chairs compared to what happens next.

Nice to see someone who actually knows history. In almost every revolution, teachers and government officials are killed first. Have to re-educate the young to think the way they want them to think.

Well, since you asked, they come in two flavors.
The first kind are Education PhDs from universities. They have never taught in a public high school. Yet they have all the answers. Their talks always start with “Research shows...”.
Never mind that their research says one thing one day, and something completely different the next day. Open classrooms are good. No, they are bad. That sort of thing.
The second kind are from for-profit education companies. They provide manuals, software, etc. Some of it is good. But most of it is garbage.
Again, their representatives have never taught in a public high school. Yet they too have all the answers. Their talks always start with “Turn to page 1 in your manual...”.
These two groups have one thing in common. They are able to seduce urban school boards with their fancy talk.
