Bear “attacks” couple’s tent in middle of the night in Colorado
Out There Colorado ^ | 5-6-20 | Breanna Sneeringer

A couple camping southwest of Colorado Springs got a rude awakening when a bear started to rustle through their campsite, causing a commotion by knocking over a stove and plates. However, what happened next was far more invasive.

According to a report from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the bear reared up and placed its paws on the couples tent. The bear then fell forward onto the tent, causing it to collapse. The incident happened at 1:30 AM Monday morning at the Golden Eagle Campground off of Highway 115.

After the tent collapsed, the bear retreated a bit before turning and huffing at the couple. The couple was then able to scare off the curious bear by shouting and starting their car alarm.

While the woman reported that she was scratched on the head by the bear, no injury was visible when the report of the event was filed on Monday. The tent’s rainfly was damaged, but not the tent itself.

“By the descriptions of the bear and by studying its footprints, it appears to be a juvenile bear,” CPW Officer Aaron Berscheid said. “Its behavior sounds more as if it was just curious rather than aggressive. There were no food attractants at the campsite. I think it was just a curious young bear.”

Feel sorry for the little guy who's going to get a lot of attention. As to Black bears are generally not aggressive towards people..., don't count on that.

That’s what you get for falling asleep and leaving your Doritos open in your sleeping bag.

The wind sang us a lullaby, the snow was thick as cream
And icicles were chandeliers like crystals in a dream
And the streams were strips of
Diamonds, and the hills were white as snow
And a bear ate all our soybeans in the night.

If it is your time of the month, don’t sleep in a tent in bear country.

Can bears be fitted with masks while living in populated areas?

All the couple should have done is tell the bear they were infected with covid-19, and the bear would have run away as fast as it could.

I was camping many years ago with a friend. We had two separate tents. He left some food in his. When we returned from a day-long hike, his tent was destroyed, mine untouched about ten feet away.

“The tent’s rainfly was damaged, but not the tent itself.”

Yes, the amount of damage to the tent was top of mind for me. I’m glad that was explained.

Sounds like the author is paid by the word.

At least put him in the county lock-up for 90 days!

I have a similar story. Went on a day hike with a new acquaintance at Holden, Washington in the 70s. He left his heavy backpack behind while I took my much smaller daypack with me. When we got back a couple hours later, his backpack was FULL of chipmunks eating all of his food. They all popped up when they heard us approach and all took off like scalded cats out of that pack. Funniest thing I ever saw! It was like watching Chip and Dale and all their friends heading for the hills.

It was the very first day of the guy’s backcountry outing — I never did learn what he did for food.

That’s what you get for falling asleep and leaving your Doritos open in your sleeping bag.

Bags of Doritos and other stuff bring worse things than bears. I was camping with a group along the California coast one time and we all slept in a ring around the campfire, no tents, just sleeping bags. I had been munching on a box of Cheez-its before I tucked in to go to sleep. I had carefully rolled up the plastic bag inside and closed the box, but that doesn't mean a thing to keen-nosed animals.

I woke up to the sound of something rummaging in that box, right next to my head, long after the campfire was out. I assumed it was a raccoon or something, as I could only see its rear end pointing at me, and cleared my throat a couple of times to scare it off, but it didn't care - it was in a feeding frenzy. I was thinking of making a much louder noise to send it running, but by then my eyes had adjusted better and I realized I was staring at the ass end of a skunk, tail up, only about two feet from my face, and that scaring it might result in a world of suffering I wasn't prepared for, so I just covered my head with the sleeping bag and let him have his fill.

When I was camping as a teenager I knew no food in the tent at night. Not even a stick of gum.

A good point, not well known, for women for survival in bear country.

There are a lot of things in the outdoor world will get people killed. I was just thinking that from this last weekend.
A 19 year young lady kayaker drowned in the surf near here. Nice calm sunny day on the bay and she didn’t respect she was in an outgoing tide. Very sad
