I'm looking for recommendations from those of you who are seasoned in studying the Bible. If you use a specific study Bible, which do you like?
I've used Homan and Life Application. Both are good. I also have e Sword which is a good study tool.
The Defender’s Study Bible, in King James or New King James. Footnotes by Dr Henry Morris, one of the fathers of creation science.
I was in a coffee shop some time back reading my study bible when some guy comes up to talk about the ‘New World Translation’ and how their language experts were world class and won awards.....BwaaaaHaaHaa...I gave him an earful.
For those that dont know the New World Translation is a Jehovahs Witness Bible and their board of translators(not publicly named for several decades) were not even educated in any thing, they are just writers and creative writers at that.
I recommend both the Nelson NKJV study Bible, as well as the John MacArthur NASB.
Depends on why you are studying. Do you want it for yourself, or to prepare to teach or preach?
If you plan to preach or teach, get a wide-margin NASB, ESV or HCSB Bible with no notes and make your own notes.
I’ve also used an Interlinear NASB/NIV with Greek translation between the two. Great way to get familiar with the Greek NT and Greek in general, without necessarily studying Greek first. Of course, it’s also a good introduction to studying Greek, if you want to go that route.
my wife has Bible study on Tuesday nights, now with zoom.
Over the years she has used a variety of books and DVDs, sometimes a movie, for discussion. The bible always in play.
Her church Calvary Chapel, has training for those who conduct bible study
The Ruckman Reference Bible.
Are the MacArthur notes identical from version to version? I assume they are but have been wondering about that. I might spring for his NKJV sometime.
Thanks.
You can get it in two or three translations as you wish.
These are pricey but very good quality Bibles that you will be able to read for years.
>>>the New World Translation is a Jehovahs Witness Bible<<<
If you really dig into it you’ll find that it is actually a Catholic Bible. It comes from the same Alexandrian texts. They copy the NASB in their treatment of John 1:29.
I uae the nlt cronicolgical life application study bible.
And despite the claims of the advocates of modern versions, whether of literal equivalent, dynamic equivalency, or just plain paraphrase like TEV, I believe that the King James/Authorized Version translation is still the most reliable English translation available, especially when supplementwed by the work of commentators whos analyses are freely available through eSword or other published volumes.
A good one-volume study Bible is the Thompson Chain-Reference KJV Bible (click here) that has been around and critiqued by fine Bible scholars for over a century.
The chief codex behind Westcott's text was the one discovered in the burn barrel of the St Catherine's Monastery down in the Sinai. Their valuation of this "oldest" version was that its preservation can be ascribed to the shelving of it for centuries because of its poorness of faithfulness in reproduction of even earlier manuscripts.
This was also true of many scrolls of the Dead Sea find, and this fact about those scrolls was communicated to me by Dr. Lawrence Schiffman, one of the Dead Sea Scrolls curators, in a personal conversation with him in his visit to Philadelphia College of the Bible, back in the 1990s.
No one who wants to really use a (fallible) translation of the Bible help guide his/her life cannot get very far without (a) having the Indwelling Holy Spirit to guide, and (b) willing to learn something of Greek and the discipline of its translation and interpretation, to begin to understand the mind of a first-century follower of The Christ.
Study of the Bible for this purpose is not a boot-strapping operation. The newborn babe in Christ needs to be discipled by (a) legitimately mature Christian(s) through the process of progressively applied holiness. A good study Bible may help, but it by itself is not sufficient. Modern versions will inherently lead the reader astray through their mistranslations and/or applications, as I have seen in a lifetime of observing the results in their adoption by individuals and whole denominations--the Methodists for one (I am 83, and raised as a Methodist PK, not truly saved until age 34 apart from the Wesleyan culture).
I love Jeff Anderson’s different “Go through the Bible” Challenges. http://powerreadthebible.com/ He sends personal e-mails about what you read each day. It is great. Free sign up or you can buy his books on Amazon. . . kindle, etc. Highly recommend it.
Then if you want to check how you are remembering what you read you can always take a quiz. I’ll send you the link later. . .I’m heading out the door right now.
www.gotquestions.org is another good go to.
I love listening to the dramatized version of the Bible. Try the Book of Revelation only takes about an hour and you are guaranteed a blessing by God https://www.biblegateway.com/audio/dramatized/niv/Rev.1
I love Nancy Guthrie. Just starting hers on the prophets. Excellent
Are you familiar with the field of Textual Criticism?
The ESV is what I use.
More importantly is the #1 rule of Bible study: as the book is a spiritual book unlike any book written by man, IT IS LOCKED!
The human mind cannot crack it or understand it - and trying to do so will always come to incorrect conclusions.
ONLY THE HOLY SPIRIT can unlock the Bible to you, and all understanding of spiritual truth only comes from REVELATION as the Holy Spirit opens the eyes of your heart to see it.
Far more important than which Bible you use is this: every time you open the Bible, in your heart get on your knees and humble yourself before Him, and ASK HIM to open His Book to you, for the Holy Spirit to speak truth to your heart - and for God to reveal Himself to you.
I Corin. 2:10 - 14
And there is a #2 RULE: the whole book is about the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, and is a revelation of WHO HE IS......ask the Holy Spirit to show you Jesus. Do this, and He will.
Ephesians 1:15 - 17, Philippians 3:10-12
Oops I misread. Study Bibles is the topic.
Yes, they are. They're also identical to the ones in the MacArthur Bible Commentary.
