Thanks for the reply.

It really bugs me that when death figures are being reported they do not bother to indicate how many had underlying medical conditions. Such info would make it clear that healthy people should be able to go back to work, with proper cautions.

There is no proof the lockdown slowed anything.
+++++
True. It’s very hard to prove. But in some form almost every country is doing what we are doing. Some are doing more. Some are doing less.

Sweden is one of the countries doing less but they are not doing nothing. Read this quote from a ABC News article:

“ There is a voluntary lockdown in place. People are advised to work from home where possible and maintain social distancing. They are told not to visit elderly relatives and of course wash their hands. The local economy has still suffered.”

There is a lot of essential truth here.

The one bone I pick with him is extracting test positives in and around NYC particularly, to the general population. Through the peak, you had to be really sick, as in hospital-admitted sick, to get a test in most cases. So the big number is not as big in those areas (or likely any other areas where test taking was even self-selected) as that would suggest.

Gotta get close to large, randomized samples to get that accurately.

Oh, yeah. Second bone. It is primarily a direct-from-China strain on the West Coast, but what appears to be a more lethal version that reportedly got here via Europe in the Northeast. Whehter that is accidental or was done to us doesn’t quite matter, but it probably makes what is getting knocked down here in the Northeast more of a challenge.

A single infected person, the initial carrier, started ALL of this, one single person with a virus that can take up to 2 weeks to show symptoms of.

The Djinni is out of the bottle now, can’t be put back, can’t be stopped. It can only slowed until it spreads everywhere around the world, over and over again. These utter idiots who still think quarantining everyone now is thinking either politically or emotionally, not rationally at all.

We can’t destroy everything because of irrational emotional people whom logic comes second in their train of thought and decision making. I get it, this stuff sucks and I personally hope that I’ve already had it and not even known, but even if not I understand hiding from it isn’t doing any good, because I can’t hide every time someone travels the globe on business and brings it right back here to spread again just like it did initially. The really sucky part is those that have had it, then are re-exposed and become ill again. that is my biggest fear now, how many times will it mutate and circulate as a separate virus?

Damn Chinese really did a number on us here, whether or not it was intentionally created as a boutique virus to start with the decision to allow it to spread around the world was a political one. Gotta make sure the playing field was leveled the world over, can’t be the only one who’s economy was ravaged by this stuff.

Bastards.

Their economy has not suffered the way ours has. The point is the virus is out there and widespread. If you are going to get it you are going to get it. All the lockdown and hysteria has done is cause economic and social disaster. One of my favorite talks at the yearly hospital medicine conference is called “things we do for no good reason”. they look at widespread and common sense practices that are not supported by evidence. I anticipate the lockdown being the subject of one of these talks in the near future

The difference is that bleeding didn’t help health.

Economic bleeding, on the other hand, is a proven benefit to physical health.

Everyone needs to recite this every morning:

"I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain."

the Litany of Fear. Dune - Frank Herbert

In a similar vein, W. Kip Vicusi has studied a number of public policy matters that are adopted on faith, and persist "for no good reason."

So-called "child proof" caps on poisons increase the rate of poisoning.

LOL. It is true.

Less travel, fewer occupational injuries, lean diet.

The life expectency was significantly higher during the great depression compared with the recovery that followed.

I’m not advocating a long miserable life, but when the criteria for decisions is length only, the misery part is just ignored. But you live a long time!!

I agree. Fauci is too handcuffed to the whole FDA crap that something has to be tested for a couple of years before it can be used on people to prevent adverse medical conditions.

He has constantly opposed Trump regarding the use of possible drugs that might limit the severity or deaths of CV-19.

I can’t stand the little rat faced liberal, Fauci, and think he should be removed as head of NIH. Birx and Redfield (CDC) should also be removed. ...The three of them have never expressed any common sense and rely on faulty models to make their decisions.

Our local and state websites don't give out that info. It is just age, gender, and race. Sometimes a news article will mention it if the person is newsworthy and the family mention it.

AFAIK there is no proof that lockdowns work. We are simply relying on our common sense. The things we are doing should work. How well? Who knows?

Actually I mostly agree we you. I think the lockdown was certainly overkill in many places and the Swedish honor system approach would have been fine. But in NY, NYC and some adjacent states it certainly wasn’t. I’m not sure how you get New York back to normal.

But it is time to bite the bullet, accept the inevitable increase in deaths and put America back to work. On that I’m certain we agree.

Aside from the basic understanding of how our immune system works and the pitfalls of staying locked up in our homes, the biggest thing to understand here is the inaccuracies of the models we were given. With data over time, we can draw conclusions. Just as the models presented by Fauci and Birx, we now have real world testing and numbers. Yes, we extrapolate data to draw a wider conclusion.

This virus is contagious. Like the flu it can be deadly. The percentage of people who require hospitalization and those who ultimately die are fairly low. The underlying conditions of those who died may have led to a poor outcome even with the flu.

We need to get out and get back to work. Some people will get sick and a smaller percentage will require treatment. The longer we stay inside and hide, our own immune systems will weaken and cause us to be more vulnerable to common ailments that we were previously protected from.

They will get back to normal because of herd immunity. NYC is so crowded they didn't really lockdown.

I use to be able to recite that from memory when I was younger. He had a whole litany of great quotes -

“What has mood to do with it? You fight when the necessity arises—no matter the mood. Mood’s a thing for cattle or making love or playing the baliset.”

“If wishes were fishes we’d all cast nets.”

Frank Herbert was a great author, I would love to have heard his opinion on what we are facing now.
