I just finished an online chat with my HS girlfriend. She's a RN in a NJ hospital. I learned a few things that are going on in that facility.
They are packed. The hospital went into a "divert status" two weeks ago. That means heart attacks, strokes, car accidents, etc. have to go elsewhere. The ICU is all COVID-19, all ventilated. The ER has a large number of ventilated patients also. Previously unused wards that had one time been pediatrics are now negative pressure COVID wards, all full.
The initial order for most COVID-19 patients includes hydroxychloroquine and an azithromycin IV. Those that come off a ventilator behave as if they suffered a stroke. The hospital is looking at high flow oxygen instead of intubation for some. She's unaware of administering nitric oxide.
They have patients coming in that are inmates or workers from a nearby prison. They are used to inmates, but not in these numbers.
We didn't get around to talking about testing.
It drives doctors crazy when patients come in with their own info (from WebMD or elsewhere), but I suspect they often use similar tools. Just as YouTube hurt some auto mechanics or home repair people (by showing some of us unenlightened ones how to fix things ourselves), the internet is giving doctors a run for their money.
My favorite was dealing with an airbag light on - manual says bring it to the dealer, YouTube guy asks if the seat had been adjusted recently. If so, push all the connections together under the seat; worked like a charm!
I remember them well - 201 & 609.
North Jersey is code for New York. In the real NJ, where Im from, nothing even remotely like this is happening. I call bullshit.
Yup, correct.
PS - to all of those less-informed folks out there that just love to bash The Garden State; yeah, it’s not perfect....if you cut off Trenton and the greater NYC area (including Spartacus’s Newark), you’d be very surprised at the diverse beauty, history, mountains, lakes, some beaches. Lots of farms, great folks who would give you the shirt off of their backs, and genuinely very nice people.
I was born and raised here; left in the late 70s to go to school in NC. After returning to NJ a few years ago (something I thought I’d never do), I was surprised how much I never bothered to pay attention to in my youth. And, no, real Jerseans are not assholes. They are the nicest folks you’d have the pleasure of meeting.
Our problem is just like other parts of the country - liberal idiot politicians ruining it for the rest of us to prop up the losers.
