Study shows copper surfaces rapidly kill human coronavirus
Surfaces made of copper and copper alloys can inactivate a human coronavirus within minutesas opposed to days for other surfacesshowing potential to combat MERS-CoV and other respiratory viruses, University of Southampton researchers reported today in mBio.
The team studied 229E, a human coronavirus closely related to MERS and SARS viruses that can cause disease ranging from the common cold to pneumonia. The virus remained infectious for at least 5 days on a range of common surfaces, such as stainless steel, Teflon, PVC, ceramic, glass, and silicone.
On a range of copper alloys, however, 229E was inactivated within a few minutes for a dose that simulated fingertip contamination. "Exposure to copper destroyed the viral genomes and irreversibly affected virus morphology, including disintegration of envelope and dispersal of surface spikes," the author wrote.
Very interesting. I have a coppered farm sink in my kitchen.
No comment on commercially available solutions. I used them initially. The high cost caused me to look at making my own. As far as I know all the health food stores and vitamin shops carry high quality product. Most available solutions are much higher concentrates than I make. That probably accounts for the high cost.
Fabulous floor! I have wanted to do a floor with them for years!
2020 version of Paul Simon’s song may be titled ‘Copper on the Soles of Shoes’.
Thanks!
Why go half way? Do it with silver dollars!
You are correct of course. Could you imagine trying to clean a penny-covered floor without the epoxy coat?
I live in Pittsburgh. There is no sun in Pittsburgh. Except for maybe two or three days in July!
Best disinfection for mail and other objects would probably be to put it under a strong ultraviolet light. UV-C light of 200-300 nm wavelength is most effective.
Got a tanning bed?
Ok, you have raised the issue of light, of radiation
Can a mask be cleansed in a microwave.
So I just set out all my Revere Ware copper bottom pans, upside down all over my house?
BkMk
Wallpaper it with sheet copper?
I don’t do colloidal silver but you could do it like that and take it as medicine.
We have used a copper spray on our crops for diseases, Tenn-cop.
I think there is a reason we are required to use Gold and silver communal cups.
In South America they believed that drinkinng from metal cups and straws was germ-free.
Just some random thoughts.
I can see the ad now - “A new kitchen floor for just pennies!”
Don’t laugh, they have copper socks and all kinds of other stuff.
UF researchers soaked sponges and scrubbing pads in raw wastewater containing a witchs brew of fecal bacteria, viruses, protozoan parasites and bacterial spores, including Bacillus cereus spores.
The researchers used an off-the-shelf microwave oven to zap the sponges and scrub pads for varying lengths of time, wringing them out and determining the microbial load of the water for each test. They compared their findings with water from control sponges and pads not placed in the microwave.
The results were unambiguous: Two minutes of microwaving on full power mode killed or inactivated more than 99 percent of all the living pathogens in the sponges and pads, although the Bacillus cereus spores required four minutes for total inactivation.
Bitton said the heat, rather than the microwave radiation, likely is what proves fatal to the pathogens. Because the microwave works by exciting water molecules, it is better to microwave wet rather than dry sponges or scrub pads, he said.
So yes, microwaving a mask should do a good job of disinfecting it, but it would need to be wetted first for the process to work.
The masks I used to use had a strip of soft metal embedded in the top edge for adjusting the fit around the nose, so I wouldn't put one of those in the microwave.
If the mask has elastic straps the microwave radiation could cause the rubber to become brittle, but how quickly I don't know. Might test some rubber bands to see.
Pennies/zinc, nickels/copper. just my six cents worth.
The type of floor in one of Thurston Howell’s guest rooms I’d expect.
COPPER FACE MASKS!
They died
