Study shows copper surfaces rapidly kill human coronavirus

Surfaces made of copper and copper alloys can inactivate a human coronavirus within minutes—as opposed to days for other surfaces—showing potential to combat MERS-CoV and other respiratory viruses, University of Southampton researchers reported today in mBio.

The team studied 229E, a human coronavirus closely related to MERS and SARS viruses that can cause disease ranging from the common cold to pneumonia. The virus remained infectious for at least 5 days on a range of common surfaces, such as stainless steel, Teflon, PVC, ceramic, glass, and silicone.

On a range of copper alloys, however, 229E was inactivated within a few minutes for a dose that simulated fingertip contamination. "Exposure to copper destroyed the viral genomes and irreversibly affected virus morphology, including disintegration of envelope and dispersal of surface spikes," the author wrote.

(The virus remained infectious for at least 5 days on a range of common surfaces).

My Practice: Products coming to the house are first laid out on table in garage and sprayed with 3% hydrogen peroxide and let sit 5 minutes to 24 hours before bringing into the house.

(A gallon of food grade HP can be diluted to 3% and will last a long time)

Glue pennies to yourself. You’ll look like an armadillo, but you’ll be safe.

I have an accounting firm and we receive a ton of documents. I researched and found studies showing the virus can last 5 to 6 days on paper. My family doctor confirmed they were given same information.

The problem with hydrogen peroxide is that you have to make direct contact (wet down) the items in question. I have some experience with Lysol in a disinfection environment and it contains a substance with persistent and fumigant like properties such that simply being in an enclosed area with it, is highly germicidal. The alcohol in it is largely just a quick evaporating carrier.

Or, just do small projects around the house until you've got everything covered with pennies.

Silver has been used as an antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral remedy for centuries. Although microbial science didn’t exist, dropping a silver coin in milk was known to keep it fresh longer. Silver dust was known to prevent wounds turning putrid. I make and use colloidal silver. Any time I have a cut ot scrape, a sore throat or an irritated eye, I simply spray colloidal silver. I also use colloidal silver in a nebulizer for chest cold onset. Twice daily since the Wuhan Virus outbreak.

Interesting info!

Zinc is often hailed for its antiviral properties. Presuming the colloidal silver is a topical application. Colloidal silver taken internally has lasting, unsightly effects.

Better use older pennies, the current ones contain virtually no copper.

The world at large is about to rediscover why precious metals became precious in the first place. It ain’t just because they’re pretty.

Our tax practice was primarily geared to help Amish & Mennonite horse & buggy farmers. About 600 of them.

The tax papers frequently came in plastic bags covered in manure.

Once had an IRS audit for one of them. Told the agent that their was no electricity and the records were in the barn. Bring a flashlight and hope the smell doesn’t bother you during the audit. It was funny when she came in dress clothes and fancy shoes. It was a wet spring and super muddy... and it wasn’t all mud.

And I do that how?

Easy-peezy. All of us sheltering at home now, when the economy starts up again, become plumbers. NO PVC, PEC or even cast-Iron though. Copper-only.

Hmmm. I wonder if including copper mesh in a mask, maybe as a liner or outer covering, would be helpful?

We use a copper sulfate solution on the farm for the cows.

They walk through it after milking to keep hoof fungal infections away.

Wonder if it is used for athlete’s foot?
