that is why my friend is adamant about blocking off her sidewalk when she is outside. When you are on a 1/2 acre lot with a huge house it doesnt leave a lot of room for a front yard

Plant land mines. Not real ones - order some fake poop and glue it down in front of your house. Creatively done, they should give it a wide berth.
Or maybe some vomit or roadkill.
Or put a speaker in a shrub nearby and feed it a looping recording of coughing.
There are many creative ways to encourage compliance. :)
