OVID-19 has taken the world by storm. Hundreds of thousands are infected (possibly many times more than the confirmed cases), the list of dead is growing exponentially longer, and capitalist economies have come to a standstill, with a global recession now virtually inevitable.
The pandemic had been predicted long before its appearance, but actions to prepare for such a crisis were barred by the cruel imperatives of an economic order in which “there’s no profit in preventing a future catastrophe,” Noam Chomsky points out in this exclusive interview for Truthout. Chomsky is emeritus professor of linguistics at MIT and laureate professor at the University of Arizona, author of more than 120 books and thousands of articles and essays. In the interview that follows, he discusses how neoliberal capitalism itself is behind the U.S.’s failed response to the pandemic

How do we put in place rapid-response systems in preparation for an outbreak when we do not know precisely in what that outbreak will consist? Are we supposed to develop and market vaccines for every co nceivable virus?

Good point. Where can we find solid evidence to support your assertion regarding the previous administration depleting CDC and not planning for replenishment?
I presume his solution is for more government control. But it was the governors of various state’s who failed to stock their warehouses with equipment not a failure of “capitalist” companies to produce the equipment. They were ready to produce as much as anyone cared to order.
Now we have a crisis of supply and they expect the “capitalists” to produce five year’s worth of production in three weeks.
The “government” had one job! (when it comes to material supplies)
If a metal foundry wants an x-ray machine to inspect its parts it just buys it. If a hospital wants one it might have to go on bended knee to get permission to buy and install it.
So we’re supposed to build and stockpile billions of dollars worth of stuff that we may never need and that might have decayed to nothingness by the time we need it?

Socialist and Communist states are well known for having ten times as many ventilators sitting around than they actually need during normal times. It’s actually a requirement right on page 1024 of the Communist Manifesto.
