The time to save lives is between realization of symptoms and realization you need to go to hospital - Day 5 to day 12 - the ‘golden period of time’ for the 20% that will need to be hospitalized. More difficult time to act beyond day 12/ admitted to ICU. 50/50 survival in UK

“Over the past 24 hours, the U.S. reported 32,850 new cases of coronavirus and 1,320 new deaths, raising total to 277,621 cases and 7,392 dead”
That’s .59 on the H1N1 Scale for the FLuBros that said it wouldn’t even be *that* bad. In 5 weeks instead of 15 months. We pass the H1N1 (2009 pandemic) death toll in 4 days at current rates, never mind expected growth.
Sigh.
Texas - Houston - heads up!
Houston hasn’t reported a surge of coronavirus cases. But its hospitals tell a different story.
The 25-county region surrounding Houston had reported fewer than 950 confirmed coronavirus cases among its 9.3 million residents as of Monday. But on that same day, there were 996 people hospitalized in the region with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19, according to the advisory council count. That figure is not cumulative and does not include patients with COVID-19 who were hospitalized and released before Monday.
Dr. Peter Hotez, an infectious disease expert and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said the disconnect between the number of positive test results and the number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 suggests that a significant majority of coronavirus cases are going undetected here.
“We know that about 1 in 5 or 1 in 10 COVID-19 patients needs to be hospitalized, so what you’re seeing in hospital admissions would suggest that the actual number of cases could be 5 to 10 times higher in Texas than what’s been reported to this point,” he said.

Los Angeles - here it comes
The next couple weeks will be an intense period in the coronavirus pandemic in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles County has ramped up testing, and is very likely to begin identifying 1,000 new cases per day as early as next week... the number of cases has held steady in recent days, a sign that social distancing is working.
The spread of the disease has begun making its way through the county’s nursing homes, treatment facilities and jails. Currently, county health officials are investigating outbreaks in 67 institutional settings where 321 staff members and residents have been sickened.
cases: 4,566
hospitalized: 1,018 (22%)
lost: 89 (1.9%)
Drug Trials
Malaria drugs aren’t the only ones on the shelf that might help coronavirus patients
Favipiravir was tested in a group of 340 COVID-19 patients in China whose illness was not severe. Half of the participants in the randomized controlled trial got favipiravir, and they cleared the new coronavirus in a median time of four days.
The other half of study participants got the drug Arbidol, an antiviral medication widely used to treat flu patients in China and Russia, and it took a median of 11 days for them to clear the virus.
In addition, lung function improved in 91% of those who got favipiravir, compared with 62% of those who got Arbidol.
Favipiravir is now being tested in patients with moderate COVID-19 disease at 11 sites in China, along with the antiviral tocilizumab, a biologic drug that dampens the immune system in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Venezuelan naval boat rams cruise liner, damages itself, sinks
The proprietors of the German-owned RCGS Resolute cruise ship said its vessel had been receiving maintenance in international waters on Tuesday morning when the armed navy boat approached it and ordered it to change direction.
The encounter escalated when, according to the company, “gun shots were fired and, shortly thereafter, the navy vessel approached the starboard side at speed with an angle of 135 degrees and purposely collided with the RCGS Resolute.”
...”While the RCGS Resolute sustained minor damages, not affecting vessel’s seaworthiness, it occurs that the navy vessel suffered severe damages while making contact with the ice-strengthened bulbous bow of the ice-class expedition cruise vessel RCGS Resolute and started to take water,” the company’s statement said.
