The SS Atlantic wrecked on the rocks of Lower Prospect in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1873. The story is nearly forgotten. We do our best to tell the story of the sinking, the worst disaster on the North Atlantic in the 1800's, and the first disaster for the White Star Line.

It did it again 100 years later? That is an astonishing tale of the sea!

Maybe another blockbuster movie can be made from this sinking of a White Star Line ship.

Oh my God! Just last week I won an auction for an antique nautical compass, a portable case with the compass for the ships binnacle, which would be on the bridge. I received it on Monday. Its in pretty good shape. The Brass Nameplate on its wooden case shows it was made for the "S.S. Atlantic"!
Binnacle from the S.S. ATLANTIC
What are the odds?!
However, this S.S. Atlantic for which this compass was made could not be the one that sank in 1873, as this compass was for another "S.S Atlantic" that was built in 1905, likely a descendent ship of the one which foundered in 1873.

I suspect this compass is actually an old, very well made reproduction sold in maritime shops. LOL!

Haven’t seen that one posted in sometime. Pretty sure it has been debunked completely.

If serious - that is REALLY cool! Congratulations. Serious . . . but the low cost I won it at made me very suspicious. See above post.

You probably have a commemorative compass. The maker, Star Compass of Boston, started production in 1905.

You probably have a commemorative compass. The maker, Star Compass of Boston, started production in 1905. I think you may be right. It works well, is made for use, but likely not purpose-made for any particular boat or ship. I dont know of too many shipping companies which would be willing to rebuild a ship under the name of one that went down. Too many superstitious sailors.

Wow. That’s quite a rare photo. I’ve never seen an actual photo of the Atlantic. Where did you find that?
