Data Suggests Spread of the Coronavirus Is Slowing in the USA

A ray of hope today that the spread of the coronavirus across American appears to be slowing down. Data compiled by the New York Times suggests that while the overall number of infections is still rising, even in states hardest hit by COVID-19, the rate of infections is easing.

Washington State was the first state in America to have a confirmed case of the novel coronavirus. The virus quickly spread, infecting an average of 2.7 additional people earlier in March, according to the NYT. After social distancing measures and other guidelines, this number has dropped to 1.4 additional people, according to one projection.

“We made a huge impact. We slowed the transmission,” Democratic Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said according to the NYT.

New York state is seeing a doubling of hospital patients every six days. But it was worse last week.

New York’s hospitalization rate is doubling every six days this week, compared to last week when it reportedly doubled every two to three days. New York City is on a mandatory shutdown in an attempt to get people to stay home and stay healthy.

“So, while the overall number is going up, the rate of doubling is actually down,” Cuomo said according to CNN.

It's not just the NY Times reporting that is showing a decline in infections.

Data from Kinsa Health, a company that makes thermometers that connect to the internet, backs up these state’s reports. Kinsa Health has been getting up to 162,000 temperature readings every day since the virus began to spread in America and created a nation-wide map showing fever levels on March 22.

Who knows ? The corona virus has been around for all of human existence but it is only in the last 20 years that it has become a public health issue.

And it's only last year that a "naturally occurring" strain, that "just happened" to acquire BOTH HIV and Ebola surface proteins, from the local environment that has few AIDS patients, and NO Ebola, and the wet market said to be the site of the first infections "just happened" to be 911 feet away from China's Level 4 Bio-weapons lab.

Since then "Don't Be Evil" google maps "just happened" to move the lab, first across the river, then 8 miles away, and last I heard 24 miles away. Now only God and google know where it is, or ever was...

Most jobs I have worked since college had a policy that there was no such thing as a sick day. Oh you could call off, but there was progressive discipline in place such that you were strongly encouraged to come in with all but the most serious of illnesses.

That was put in place by various LEAN consultants and MBAs. I lost a promotion as a decent career because of my NICU child. When it was explained to me in a review list how much my child cost the bottom line, and clear expectations on how I needed to sacrifice to earn my keep, I took the messagethat I was expected to be moving on soon.

That is why people work sock, and after this it will be even worse. Got a fever? Ok, we will fire you immediately rather than run the risk of having to pay medical insurance.

I’ve seen it up close.

There are two things that are going to put an end to or seriously diminish the voluntary house arrest dictates (i.e., "shelter-in-place" mandates) that are being extended almost daily (now into June) in so many states as the effects of this Chinese virus wane over the next few weeks. No, money is not a significant factor at least in the near future as public workers -- every single one of whom continues to receive their full pay, benefits and pension credits as they are favored in the eyes of the politicians and are therefore immune to the serious economic consequences for which the governors are responsible; and as workers in the private sector are being anesthesized somewhat from the severe economic consequences caused by the governors by the newly enhanced unemployment benefits which pay many of these laid-off workers more than what they earned while employed.

Rather, the two things that will have a significant impact to the politicians' wet dream of total control over citizens are the weather and human nature, specifically "American-style" human nature. You see, as the weather improves from dreary winter through spring and into summer -- warm sunny skies, lengthening days and fresh outdoor natural sights and smells that trigger something magical in many people -- and as the novelty of staying at home with the kids for a lenghthening period wears increasingly thin by forcing people to spend most of their time "sheltered" indoors, coupled with all of the forced business and school closures and mandated recreational activities curtailments, people are going to become increasingly impatient with what has been tolerated up to now.

As regards human nature and the American spirit, even while drawing enhanced unemployment benefits those who enjoy working, creating, serving and social interacting -- which I think amounts to a large majority of the populace -- are going to be increasingly less susceptible to the panic and hysteria promoted incessantly by the media and by social media, and their yearning to do something beyond themselves and the limited world of their homes is eventually going to create an even bigger problem for the governors beyond the economic calamity they have caused. So when these governors threaten ("predict", if you prefer) that their mandates may very well extend out beyond 6, 10, 12 or more weeks beyond today, I firmly believe they are in for a rude awakening. Contrary to what some are saying (perhaps, hoping), what has taken place to control this virus is not the "new normal" ... at least not in America! Cheers & sincere wishes for good health to all.
