India Authorizes Hydroxy-Chloroquine For Coronavirus Infection Prevention -- Prophylaxis for High-risk Population

Amid rising coronavirus cases in India, the national task force for COVID-19 constituted by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has recommended hydroxy-chloroquine as a preventive medication for high-risk populations.

According to this advisory distributed from New Delhi on March 22, 2020, hydroxy-chloroquine should be given to high-risk population -- asymptomatic healthcare workers involved in the care of suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 disease and asymptomatic household contacts of laboratory-confirmed cases.

The hydroxy-chloroquine protocol recommended by the National Task Force has been approved by the Drug Controller General of India (DGCI) for restricted use in emergency situations.

"Hydroxy-chloroquine is found to be effective against coronavirus in laboratory studies and in-vivo studies. Its use in prophylaxis is derived from the available evidence of benefit as treatment and supported by preclinical data," the advisory said.

This is good news since there are currently no approved treatments for COVID-19, which is the highly contagious, sometimes fatal, respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

However, hydroxy-chloroquine is not recommended for prophylaxis in children under 15 years of age.

‘If anyone becomes symptomatic while on prophylaxis, they should immediately contact the health facility, get tested as per national guidelines, and follow the standard treatment protocol.’

"All asymptomatic contacts of laboratory-confirmed cases should remain in home quarantine as per the national guidelines, even if they are on prophylactic therapy," it said.

Furthermore, the task force also warned that placing the healthcare workers under chemoprophylaxis should not instill a sense of false security in them and asked them to follow all prescribed public health measures such as frequent washing of hands, respiratory etiquettes, keeping a safe distance of minimum one meter and use of personal protective equipment.

Previously, the government of India issued a statement banning the export of hydroxychloroquine.

Announced on March 25, 2020, by the Department of Commerce, Directorate General of Foreign Trade, this statement restricts this malaria medicine and any formulations, from being shipped outside of India, except for companies that must fulfill existing contracts and on humanitarian grounds.

The ban came after India curbed the export of 26 pharmaceutical ingredients and the medicines made from them, including Paracetamol - a common pain reliever also sold as acetaminophen, reported the BBC.

In previous news, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on March 24, 2020, it was removing an import ban on Indian pharmaceutical products so that the company could export hydroxychloroquine and the required active pharmaceutical ingredients to make the medicine, to the USA.

I love Inida. It’s got problems galore but there are some really smart people there with an abundance of a rare human commodity called ‘Common Sense’.

Stories like this make the MSM-Democrats seethe with rage.

They know the tide will turn, that they’re on the wrong end of this, that they are too far out on the branch to climb back.

But hey, they’ve been putting themselves in that position continually since virtually the morning after PDJT was elected, and it hasn’t stopped them, hasn’t made them reconsider their plans, hasn’t taken any of them off the media (well, except Chris Matthews I guess). Hasn’t detracted from their credibility to any visible degree, which tells you something about their credibility I guess.

From the reports I’ve seen, it doesn’t so much keep one from getting sick from the virus as much as it protects the person from it’s own gone-crazy immune system and the resulting cytokine storm, which is what kills most people.

So if you start taking it before the virus hits you, you will get mild flu like symptoms once the virus enters your body. Your immune system attacks the virus but hydroxychloroquine keeps it from overreacting. Instead it (the immune system) goes on mopping up the virus and in the process you’ve become immune!

If you start taking the med after the virus got to you and you’re at the beginning stages of the cytokine storm, apparently the med is able to corral the immune system sufficiently to keep it from killing you. Once you recover, again you’re immune.

So it’s really an incredible drug. It keeps you alive while being infected and in the process you become immune.

What that means is that we don’t have to wait for a vaccine.

It would be incredible news if this is the case. It would relegate C19 to a garden variety flu, perhaps even milder.

Several doctors here in the Philippines have died treating covid2, and my relative juat asked me the dosage, so thanks for the headsup from India.

https://www.expresshealthcare.in/news/advisory-on-use-of-hydroxy-chloroquine-as-prophylaxis-for-sars-cov-2-infection/417793/

dosage recommended seems to be the same dosage as I used 40 years ago when I worked in Africa to prevent malaria.

Asymptomatic healthcare workers involved in the care of suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19: 400 mg twice a day on Day one, followed by 400 mg once weekly for next seven weeks; to be taken with meals.

Asymptomatic household contacts of laboratory confirmed cases: 400 mg twice a day on Day one, followed by 400 mg once weekly for next three weeks; to be taken with meals.

I suspect more docs and nurses in third world countries are at risk because not everyone sick is tested and there is a lack of equipment.

however, it can cause irregular heart beats/sudden death, so don’t use it without your doctor checking it.

and you can overdose on it (which is why the lady and her husband who used fish medicine died: probably fatal arrhytmia).

I am not on it, because I am retired and not well enough to work as a physician anymore, so am staying inside.
