Thread #27 here:

So, on average, about 270+ people died in Lombardy daily in ‘18.
How does that compare to the daily death rate there over the past week or 2?
I tell you something that will make people hate me...
I’m for ‘frontloading the curve’ to flatten it.
Get the kids (under 40) sick and recovered and out of the hospitals quickly. Love to see the NY ICUs full- but not overwhelmed. Get the kids everywhere sick.
I should have been a General... or tyrant.
If I could be certain my test would be discarded I’d go for that.
Otherwise my tinfoil thinks of ‘massive DNA trawl’.
Mask is good.
More helpful to a healthcare worker, but good for all.
Awful lot we don’t know about this. Seems like a very, very serious cold. But that doesn’t help us much to know. And the data is all over, even when it’s even sensible.

Roosevelt is tied up alongside the pier in Guam while every crew member is tested.
And they remain in a fully operational, deployed status. They could be on Fiery Cross Reef in less than 3 days...or intercepting a Chicom fleet exiting the South China Sea anywhere.
It’s hyperbolic to say they are quarantined.
They ARE the friggin quarantine.
“But asymptomatics are not going to be all that contagious/transmitting, (Im sure R0 pretty low), because they wouldnt be coughing and sneezing much, by definition.”
However, we do know as a fact that asymptomatics can be contagious. Plenty of examples. It has been documented a number of times right here on FR. So even if they have a low R0 themselves, their victims will not necessarily and it will snowball. All that does is slow down the first generation or two until you get a symptomatic and another outbreak.
Have you ever noticed how much some people spray when they talk? Or stick their fingers in unfortunate places and then smear everything they touch? Some would only have to kiss their spouse to set it off, or smooch one of the kiddies (who themselves are the most likely asymptomatic carriers) goodnight and then *that* little disease reservoir is off to the races.
[Slightly germophobic father of 6. I know what I am talking about, LOL]

As long as it is the least vulnerable and does not crash our HCS, I would support that. Meanwhile we figure it out for the rest.
Teach them young’uns the virtue of work and sacrifice for the good of others.
No kidding. Very true.

Maybe a pee test like for pregnancy? Something non-invasive. We’d have to come up with one.
But heck, I could harvest the DNA of most people in my town without them even knowing if I had a reason to. It isn’t hard.
That all depends on the ‘unicorns’ though.
And it will take quite a while for them to recover and stop shedding- couple of months or so. Then we can let the “at risk” free.
Would like to see more aggresssive testing of old folks homes etsc
Palliative care.
It’s the wholesale harvesting that would allow a bad actor to target a population or group of people.
I’m leery of that sort of thing.
I’d feel more comfortable with a home test I could do myself and then destroy.
I’d actually like to know. Kroger is hiring and we might need the money :/
Effective testing here would consist of three tests taken at eight day intervals for everyone on board, with new people being barred for entry during the 24-day period. The eight-day interval is to outlast almost all pre-infectious periods while the Virus is building up in someone.
How fast a given victim goes from infection to testing positive for it seems to depend a lot on the initial viral load producing the infection.
After reading some comments on that Henry Ford letter, it might be fake. What kind of person would take the time to fake that?
That (alcohol) should work, but it likely will make some inks run, and I’d think some types of paper would be damaged.
I’m heat treating (toaster oven) as described above. 165 deg. may be overkill, esp. if one simply wants to treat a little longer than 20 minutes. My Mom’s oven “warms” right at 150 deg. At worst, open mail to read an hour (or if really paranoid) 2 hours later. No guarantees of the heat’s effect on the enclosed if it is a home-made Easter card from a niece, though. :-(

I thought of testing the interior of our black (and very exposed) mailbox today (sunny, 82 deg. F high) but it was quite windy. Since it didn’t “feel” like it was anywhere near even 120 deg. F inside, I didn’t bother.
Quarantines are “the oldest trick in the book” to navies. To all the military.
Hope and expect ours to respond as they should.
