I think Levitt's right because the short-term pain of all the social distancing and the fact we stopped people coming in from China in late January 2020 resulted in a lot less steep curve in the rise of serious cases and deaths. New York City is still an issue due to the dense living conditions in Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens boroughs.

I’m definitely hoping that Dr. Levitt is as smart as we all hope he is.

Smart has nothing to do with it. There are plenty of very smart people in the world who are regularly wrong in very important ways.

What the author and we are hoping is that Dr. Levitt's methodology is correct/effective and his analysis of this problem produces accurate results that predict a early decline of the virus.

But did we know ahead of time that his prediction would be the one that was accurate. There were, I assume, many predictions with a wide range of results, many of which were very wrong. I hope he is correct, my only worry would be that his estimate was “lucky” and the number could still end up higher.
