Coronavirus in N.Y.: ‘Deluge’ of Cases Begins Hitting Hospitals
NY Times ^ | 03-20-2020 | Staff

New York State’s long-feared surge of coronavirus cases has begun, thrusting the medical system toward a crisis point.

In a startlingly quick ascent, officials reported on Friday that the state was closing in on 8,000 positive tests, about half the cases in the country. The number was 10 times higher than what was reported earlier in the week.

In the Bronx, doctors at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center say they have only a few remaining ventilators for patients who need them to breathe. In Brooklyn, doctors at Kings County Hospital Center say they are so low on supplies that they are reusing masks for up to a week, slathering them with hand sanitizer between shifts.

Some of the jump in New York’s cases can be traced to significantly increased testing, which the state began this week. But the escalation, and the response, could offer other states a glimpse of what might be in store if the virus continues to spread. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday urged residents to stay indoors and ordered nonessential businesses to keep workers home.

State officials have projected that the number of coronavirus cases in New York will peak in early May. Both the governor and Mayor Bill de Blasio have used wartime metaphors and analogies to paint a grim picture of what to expect. Officials have said the state would need to double its available hospital beds to 100,000 and could be short as many as 25,000 ventilators.

As it prepares for the worst-case projections, the state is asking retired health care workers to volunteer to help. The city is considering trying to turn the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan into a makeshift hospital.

I wonder if many cases are coming from Chinatown or the suburbs where many Chinese have moved to?

Carry on as normal, and put additional resources into the hospitals and medical facilities, where they might be needed. And then shut my fucking trap so as not to make the problem worse than it needs to be.

Precisely. This is the correct response. Mobilize resources where they are needed most, then shut up and get out of the way. Shutting down the country will create ancillary problems that will hamper our virus response.

Here is an interesting post by Jim Robinson. A lot of comments from FReepers who are not waiting for the government to tell them how to improve their health. Also willing to explore less popular ideas. Especially since Big Pharma has a vested interest in discouraging the use of readily available, low cost items like Vitamin C.

The following is a study from early on at Evergreen Hospital in Washington. Probably many from the nursing home.

Limited sample size (21 people), average age 70.

Mechanical ventilation was initiated in 15 patients (71%) (Table 2). Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) was observed in 15 of 15 patients (100%) requiring mechanical ventilation and 8 of 15 (53%) developed severe ARDS by 72 hours....

As of March 17, 2020, mortality was 67% and 24% of patients have remained critically ill and 9.5% have been discharged from the ICU.

Cease your childishness.

You know very well why Wuhan Flu has exploded in Northern Italy. It’s really very obvious.

Italy, particularly Northern Italy, contains the largest population of Chinese immigrants in Europe. Many Chinese work for the Milan fashion houses and a great number of them traveled back to China for the Chinese New Year. When they returned, they brought the flu back with them.

Also, many Italians are heavy smokers. That fact doesn’t help their lungs and makes them more susceptible.

Italians are also known for their affectionate greetings, such as hugging and kissing each other on the cheeks.

Italy also has socialized medicine and it is known that many doctors have refused to treat the older people. It is also a fact that Italy has the largest population of elderly people in Europe.

Considering all those factors, is it really surprising that Northern Italy has been hit so hard?

Another fact that I forgot to mention is that many Italians live close together. Many live in apartments and some live with their relatives. Italian families are close and it’s not unusual to have several generations living under one roof. That’s another risk.

The US is not Italy. Places such as New York may be hit harder, due to the fact that so many people live practically on top of each other and travel by crowded subways, buses, etc. That makes them more susceptible.

Sorry, snowflake, but your amusing little post didn’t bother me. On the contrary, it made you look childish and ignorant. I had a good laugh.

I am too intelligent to give credence to the Lame Stream Media. OTOH, you are obviously a sheep who believes every lie the NYT, CNN and the other propaganda outlets vomit out. Sucks to be you.

I hope you will be happy when the economy crashes and Biden is elected in November. Because that is exactly where all of this ridiculous hysteria will lead us.

Grow up.

Why is the death rate so low and yet so many hospitalizations? Are they catching ppatients early? Are they admitting nearly all patients who test positive for Wanhu virus? Is it spreading so fast there that death rates haven’t caught up? Germany has really low death rates too. We are at 1.25 now and I bet it is actually lower. Yet Italy is so high. Strange.

480,000 US deaths a year are supposedly smoking related.

480,000.

And no piece of our economy has been destroyed over it.

LOL. I’m sure there were many basketball fans up in arms about that.

Seriously, that was horribly unfair to the teams in the tournament and their fans. It’s sad that there will be no National Champion this year.

Being from Alabama we, along with most Southerners, are College Football fanatics. If the worst happened and they cancelled the College Football season, we would probably riot.
