New York States long-feared surge of coronavirus cases has begun, thrusting the medical system toward a crisis point.
In a startlingly quick ascent, officials reported on Friday that the state was closing in on 8,000 positive tests, about half the cases in the country. The number was 10 times higher than what was reported earlier in the week.
In the Bronx, doctors at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center say they have only a few remaining ventilators for patients who need them to breathe. In Brooklyn, doctors at Kings County Hospital Center say they are so low on supplies that they are reusing masks for up to a week, slathering them with hand sanitizer between shifts.
Some of the jump in New Yorks cases can be traced to significantly increased testing, which the state began this week. But the escalation, and the response, could offer other states a glimpse of what might be in store if the virus continues to spread. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday urged residents to stay indoors and ordered nonessential businesses to keep workers home.
State officials have projected that the number of coronavirus cases in New York will peak in early May. Both the governor and Mayor Bill de Blasio have used wartime metaphors and analogies to paint a grim picture of what to expect. Officials have said the state would need to double its available hospital beds to 100,000 and could be short as many as 25,000 ventilators.
As it prepares for the worst-case projections, the state is asking retired health care workers to volunteer to help. The city is considering trying to turn the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan into a makeshift hospital.

I saw this guy on Laura tonight but wasn't really listening to the TV.
Seems like pretty good breaking news.
This thing is not a hoax or left-wing conspiracy and it is not checking political affiliations before killing people. I am growing tired of the asinine commentary that seems to be bubbling up on serious discussion threads.
Not nearly as tired as I am of the sudden desire among Kung Flu hobbyists to take every bit of Fake News from the NY TIMES as unbiased reportage.
Have we conservatives lost are minds? Apparently, so.
last week I was seeing medical advice NOT to go to the doctor’s office or hospital if you felt ill because you pose a transmission risk.
I really don’t know what to think about this Conusvirus.
A fair amount? What is that 2?
I’m keeping it in perspective. The stats from other countries looks bad any way you cut it. The bright spot of hope is that we think we have identified effective treatments.
The most valuable information you can give us, in my opinion, is whether you are able to treat the patients with Chorloquine and azithromycin or Gildan’s drug. Or are you being prevented from trying that?
Nice try... South Korea is home to 51.5 million people. 313,000 is .6% of the population. These people were not selected randomly. They either had symptoms or suspected exposures.
“This thing is not a hoax or left-wing conspiracy and it is not checking political affiliations before killing people. I am growing tired of the asinine commentary that seems to be bubbling up on serious discussion threads.”
Same here. Not a joke and they need to stay on their “flubro” thread.
Hot damn........that’s a game changer. Trump was right again!!
‘Slathered with hand sanitizer’ sounds like a stretch.”
It does. Would clog them instantly.
So you bring in people to train staff and to operate the equipment. The state should have a contingency plan to staff hot spots. We do something similar for electrical power workers, fireman, etc. When there are natural disasters, needed personnel come from outside the state and the region.
That's nothing new. Whatever happens to disrupt the economy or crash the markets, is paid for by the ordinary taxpayer in the private sector. And usually the large corporations and banks get bailed out with taxpayer money, but nobody does anything to help the small business owners and workers when they lose money due to economic disruptions and disasters.
Does every case require a ventilator? A couple of years ago my wife had a severe case of pneumonitis, in consequence of chemotherapy, and she didn't have a ventilator at all, just oxygen from a nasal cannula and healthy doses of prednisone. She was better enough in a few days to go home.
The NYC Board of Health is making a presumptive diagnosis of COVID-19 in anyone with fever and cough. If you have shortness of breath, or infiltrates on your chest x ray or some ancillary lab data, it merits a formal admission in most cases to a hospital. The big question is will beginning treatment with chloroquine and Zithromax prevent these patients from going into respiratory failure and requiring intubation. If this treatment works in most then a major corner will have been turned and the health care system will not collapse. The next five days will tell the story. There is much more to this than is currently being released.
I broke out the NY numbers. Also check out Washington. Very much so decelerating

So exactly what is your (and many other’s here) point? What EXACTLY is your point?
What EXACTLY would you do right now that is not be done or what would you reverse?

FEMA isolation camps for End time Kung Flu addicts would be an even better idea. We’re certainly paying for them. Might as well get some good use of them.
Thanks for the info on the cloth! I might get some of those, after the traffic in those places slows down.
ummm no...I’m pissed and totally disgusted that people like you just roll over; you are the danger. God help us if a true disaster happens natonwide. This is not it.
Or they were in regional hot spots.
I was about to say, we don’t need to do extensive testing in Iowa where there is 1 case. But I see they are up to 45 cases. But there are probably still counties across America where we don’t need to test heavily yet.
Lovely pivot. I have treated more than two. How many have you treated? As an intensivist standard treatment works but I will be using plaquenil with any new cases. My colleagues report good success with plaquenil
Azitheomycinn. I really dont want to argue with you. Please let the data lead us to the proper conclusions. I have every statistical reason to believe that this is a lot overblown and the clinical experience to confirm it. It is a problem? Yes. But at this point I less the deaths surge past 100,000 then we have to understand we will do this every influenza and respiratory disease year
Please take peace and joy in living in the greatest country on earth that can do anything we set our mind to.
