I just got back from trying to get some common items I need in my refrigerator: carrots, Lactaid milk, and Stok unsweetened coffee. Now I feel very depressed and apprehensive for what's gonna be coming up in the next few weeks.
Went to BJs, as they have great prices on all of the above. I walked into a near-empty store--and immediately the theme music from "The Twilight Zone" started playing. Vegetables--pretty wiped out, and NO carrots. Milk--NO milk of any kind, except goat milk. Guys, you can have my portion of the goat milk! I bought some Silk Almond Milk just to have something. I felt like I'd been slapped, like I had stepped into a nightmare. Here I was in America, and I was being forced to live like someone in a turd world country, with extensive food shortages.
I continued on to Wegmans, and was treated to pretty much the same experience. There was a sign over the carrots -- "Limit: 2 bags of carrots"--but they needn't have bothered, as there WERE no carrots to buy. I needed some for a recipe, so I bought baby food carrots. And a goo-goo to you, too! When I reached the dairy section, I was reminded of Texas--lots of WIDE OPEN SPACES. No milk in sight, and only a few cartons of eggs. I grabbed some eggs, as I needed to buy them before Passover.
As if I didn't hate China, murderous land of selling political prisoners' body parts and the most heinous methods of torturing and killing numerous animal species I ever heard of before, now they are firmly in my sights. I realize that not being able to buy carrots, milk, or refrigerated coffee does not begin to approach the horrible ramifications of the coronavirus plague on many families, putting wage-earners out of work itself, bringing death to loved ones, preventing freedom of movement, and all the other negative changes to our lives, but it's what happened to me now, so far. The food shortage was sufficient to bring it home to me, realtime.
How are the rest of you suffering and how are you coping? I feel for all Americans' suffering induced by the unspeakable lowlife Chinese and their selfishness.
Do you even prep, Bro?
I went shopping. No bread or eggs. Milk was plentiful. Canned soup except for cream of chicken and cream.of mushroom was wiped out. Produce and cereal aisles were about half empty. Cheese and processed lunch meat were available in the normal quantities.
Got my supplies 4 weeks ago....I’m good for 60 days.....After that,we shall see....
Alas, I do not presently own a property with a spacious basement to store dry goods and extra refrigerators and freezers to store perishables. When I finally found a local source of Lactaid milk, Stoke, eggs and carrots, I bought extra, enough for a few weeks, lest I have to experience what I did at the first 2 stores again so soon. That's the best I could do for now.
I wish I could post a photo...don’t know how anymore. but I went to Gelsons this morning...and the produce looked like a grand display....it was just stocked with wonder veggies and fruits.
The rest of the store was less impressive with varying degrees.
Trader Joes across the street [I did nit try to go in} has lines around the building like crazy. no lines at Gelsons. I bought lots of fresh pastries and breakfast stuff.
Everything but bottled OJ. You could buy frozen OJ or buy oranges and squeeze your own. I haven’t checked other stores, just the one where I normally shop.
Amazon is running short on lots of food items and toilet paper.....
NYC looks to be the US Hot Spot.
Coumo was right to ask for help in increasing local hospital beds.
Trump came through for him with the Hospital ship.
I hope it is enough.
Stay out of it until treatments are shown to be effective.
At this point in time I really don’t believe the out of stock condition will continue at quite such level for too long, but there are 2 things that have to be cleared out of the system first.
First are the people who are prepping. EVERYONE is putting away non-perishable food for time frames ranging from 2 weeks to 6 months.
Second are all the people who are not only cooking instead of eating out, but also stocking fresh food for 2 weeks instead of 1 week or daily or in many cases not at all if they only eat out.
It’s going to take some time for stores and supply chains to reorient how much food to stock and where for a literal overnight change in eating habits.
There’s still no evidence that our ability to grow/make/provide food is compromised. Just the eating habits and market conditions have drastically changed.
Walmart on Tuesday reminded me a bit of a ‘vacation’ I took behind the iron curtain during the cold war. Now, if someone would just give me the address of a hard currency store where the elite shop....
I did do my Passover goods shopping 2 weeks ago and laid in all my non-perishable supplies for the holiday, as they tend to run out of a lot of things very close to the holiday.
The one thing I am trying to stock up on is paperback books. The libraries are closed, and I really don't want books from them mailed to me, which they offer--books which have previously had dried snot, food stains, hair, and the like trapped between the pages. So I am trying to stockpile paperback novels by the likes of James Lee Burke, Adriana Trigiani, David Balducci, C.J. Box, etc.
Meijer was low on bread and certain canned goods, but other than that it wasn’t horrible.

It was like that last week down here in Florida when we had our first spike in cases. The local supermarket, Walmart, Aldis, and Whole Foods were all wiped out. Yesterday and today - I was able to pick up and stock up on everything I wanted. Hopefully youll see the same as your stores continue to restock.
I stocked up on 30 days of microwave popcorn today.
It was on sale.
when you get a chance, stock up on coffee, pancake mix, dried milk, rice and beans...I like to have goods that only takes water...Try Harmony House for dried foods..You would be amazed at what they have....
I’m well prepped in small town Minnesota. I wanted fresh greens, tomatoes, broccoli, berries, etc. Perishables were all I needed. I found them all.
Took a look around and noticed there was no milk, no TP (of course!), no bread, no ground beef and many other items.
It was strange. I’m glad I didn’t need any of those items. We’re good for at least a couple of months.
Went today around lunchtime. Story chain here in Texas called HEB. They’ve instituted shorter store hours and have placed caps on a lot of goods like meats, dairy, rice/beans, and canned goods to limit how many items you can buy at a time. While there is a lot of aisles that look a little bare, the only aisle that was completely wiped out was the toilet paper and diaper shelves. They had a good amount of everything else.
I went by Safeway in the morning. The cleaning supply aisle was completely empty and of course there was no toilet paper to be seen. But there was plenty of fresh produce, the dairy section was well stocked, and there was plenty of food in the deli section.
Worse case scenario I have 6 months of MREs in emergency food supplies.
