Her Mom and I have been trying to persuade her not to go. She will be flying from iad to fort lauderdale. Cheap tickets. Several of her friends scooped them up last minute and the air b&b is dirt cheap. Any thoughts on how to convince her to cancel would be helpful. She successful, single and is in her mid 20s and has just been told to work from home for the next 3 weeks.

Some people have not done their homework and looked at the stats. Sure, you or your offspring may be fine, but consider this. Everywhere this thing has exploded so far about 20% require hospital stays and a significant % need respirators. 100,000 ICU beds nationwide. Somewhere on the order of 100K min to 200K max ventilators available. That is 0.000625% of the population. Locking down for a while is not a big deal. Blunting the spread keeps the epidemic from spiking too fast and overwhelming the system. I am not panicked but the "It's just the flu" bros are idiots and narcissistic beyond belief.

It is fine if she goes but if she shows ANY symptoms she HAS to self quarantine for 14 days be it there or when she returns. I would wear a mask and gloves in the airports and on the plane and learn how to take off them off safely.

Her catching it statistically is extremely likely to be no worse than the flu. If she catches it and spreads it that is the issue at hand. If she swears on both your lives to self quarantine if she shows ANY symptoms be fine with it. If not disown her and write her off.

She’s in “the safe” age range and health posture - if she takes normal cold/Flu precautions she should be fine - and manage to not spread anything.
Ironic how so many of us (I’m one too) hate the nanny State trying to guide our lives and then we try to do the same to our adult children.

I flew from LAX to Chicago yesterday - 75 people were on the plane. No issues with anyone - actually everyone was in a good mood talking about how this whole “crisis” is BS.

I would fly next week if I there were business meeting still scheduled. But everything has been cancelled.

Relax. Honestly folks relax. Here is the reality not the hysteria

Unless this virus flames out you are, at some point going to be exposed, and for most everyone that is, it will be little more than a.mild case of the flu in terms of the symptoms you will experience if that.

The closing down or things is not designed or intended to stop this because it can’t be stopped it’s to slow the spread to a point where you don’t wind up with a large spike of cases all at once that overwhelms the system.

About 10-15% of cases (last numbers I saw) will get severe cases and as long as they are able to get adequate care they will recover and be fine.. and the younger you are the odds are greatly in your favor of being okay.

I believe the world wide mortality rate for someone your daughters age is something like .2 or .02 %... I know it’s normal to worry about your kids and yes there is always a chance your daughter could be in that .2 or .02% but sheen you factor the odds of her being exposed, and then having a severe cases and then dying from it... she’s far more likely to die for something far more innocuous during her trip.

If she has an underlying medical condition I would be more concerned but honestly you are trying to make her fearful over something that is no more of a threat statistically to her life than being killed in a car accident on her trip. Calm down and stop
