I had kind of backed off of buying because our stores are all full, even walmart and we only have one case in St Louis but I’m going to have to step it up again. Pretty soon other States are going to have an affect on what our stores have. We have about a month supplies but I think I’m going to double that. We’ve got 32 mega rolls of TP which should be fine for two months. We’ll get a couple more 8 packs just in case. Might be able to do some barter with it. LOL One more good shopping trip for food ought to do us.

It’s all those non-food items that we’ll need fairly soon. We need a new push mower, weed wacker, tires, brake pads and a bunch of other stuff for me to work. To Get List time.

Thanks....good to know!

I figure the SE TX HEAT kills any bugs that may have tried to get in it....it’ll be our last resort TP.

I have lots of newer, stocked up.

Like they say, it’s when not if we get a case of it here. Probably already is and just hasn’t been tested.

Update from Bavaria, Germany (close relative lives there):

COVID-19 is making people crazy and is pretty much everything we hear/see in the news . . . we were at the grocery store buying toilet paper, pasta, rice, and other staples. All of the other ‘horders’ were already there beating us to the punch Toilet paper, paper towels, flour, hand sanitizer are out. Other staples are still available but I can see a strain on the people who work in the grocery stores. Seriously, I’ve not seen our grocery store this crowded except for between Christmas and New Year when they have basically two three day holiday periods where stores are closed.

The economic impact is just now starting; the German DAX (their wall street) is crashing, airlines/trains/buses are pretty much empty as people cut back on travel .

The Bavarian government has closed all schools and kindergartens starting on Monday for at least five weeks. The kids will love it but I’m not so sure about the parents. The professional soccer league (Bundesliga) will play games this weekend in front of empty stadiums. Full suspension is expected next week.

Border controls are much stricter. The Czech government has essentially closed their border with Germany. It will get worse before it gets better.

I picked up a turkey breast yesterday too. Will have a nice meal with half, and slice the rest for sandwiches. Freezes great and I love turkey!

If I were a health official in Idaho I would be testing any serious pulmonary cases in the hospital nearest to Jackson Hole (since I know many folks in that part of Idaho commute over the mountain to work there).

Message from Agnes the pedantic.

Dry beans from the grocery store can PROBABLY be used to plant. Test 10 or so on a damp paper towel in a ziploc bag somewhere ‘bright’ but not in direct sun.

Ditto limas, blackeyed peas and dry soup mix (the split peas obviously won’t sprout and you’ll probably be better off if you sort the varieties in the bag before you plant them).

Sweet potatoes, garlic, ginger, turmeric from the store can be planted/slipped. Instructions on the net.

Ripe winter squash (spaghetti squash, butternuts, pumpkins) more than likely have viable seeds. Even IF they were hybrids you’ll still get winter squash. Ditto RIPE peppers (the red, orange or yellow ones), tomatoes (the campari ones I know will come true from seed).

Popcorn (the stuff in the big bags, not the stuff in the microwaveable pouches (although that might too)) will probably sprout. Test to see. Lots of instructions on how to grow corn/popcorn on the net.

This is the summer I’m going to plant chia seeds (from the bag of them from NOW) to see if that will work. Ch Ch Ch Chia.

Some lettuce, celery, etc can be rooted. You don’t necessarily want to eat this but if it goes to seed you can plant the seeds this fall (for the lettuce)

Lots and lots of links/videos on ‘grocery store gardening’ out there.

If you don’t have a way to till and don’t have any raised beds look up ‘lasagna gardening’. We do this.

I plant my ginger in 2L drink bottles, minus top portion, we’ve scavenged from others.

I seldom use ‘potting soil’. Usually the bags of topsoil from Lowes and add my own amendments. We’re going to get a truck load of dirt this afternoon from a local guy. We’re tearing down our 3 row cinderblock raised beds and making more 2 row ones.

If you plant a garden you wouldn’t normally plant and all this blows over by June, you’ll have ‘free’ food this summer. Yay. If not, you’ll have fresh! food this summer and fall. Yay.

I called P&G once years ago and asked about the shelf life of laundry detergent.

They told me that liquid soaps like that and dish washing detergent are almost indefinitely.

If you plan to grow a lot of (small) grains like rice you will likely need a net and some sort of support system. We use Tposts that have cut off drink bottles on top to keep the net from catching and tearing. YMMV of course.
