Today, against my better judgement, I went out with a neighbor to lunch. There were two women seated about 15 feet away laughing about just escaping Fremont, CA, and Covid.
The were staying in a nearby B&B, and looking forward to drivng to San Antonio to attend a concert at the Majestic Theater.
People are so mobile these days, and my dink Central TX town will not be a priority for receiving test kits. That was my last outing. My Mom’s nurse will begin her 7 week paid vacation tomorrow.
I guess I have pulled up the drawbridge, and am not going to tempt fate by another unnecessary outing.

China actually had it for 2 months, but for the first month, they didn’t know they had it. We knew we had it 2 months ago (in Seattle) and, I guess, the CDC just figured it would ‘putter out’. They guessed wrong. They should have looked at Wuhan. It wasn’t a secret for most of those 2 months.

One of the things that’s been pointed out is that we often know what’s going on in China, more than people living there, even ‘connected’ people there - due to their ‘Great Firewall’. The people in Wuhan were being systematically blocked from information which may have helped them prior to Jan 23...we managed to get some information.
But in the end, it didn’t matter - the ‘just the flu, bro’ bunch pretty much discounted everything out of China and figured our oceans would, somehow, protect us, just as they figured the same for most of 1941...until December.

revisiting your post because I found the link I was looking for, we need a comment from O’Brien, as seems there was a lot of fluid redundancy to begin with, and the ‘global health unit’ functions may be incorporated under another umbrella. To be noted from the Politico link, the downsizing of the NSC started under Obama to bring it back to a coordinating role over a policy role.
