Does coronavirus make it okay to leave people hanging when they offer a handshake?
Coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the Tampa Bay area.
Handshakes can spread germs, and with the continued spread of the new coronavirus, not to mention flu season, people may be dreading social situations that normally include a hearty handshake. In Florida, 12 residents had tested positive for COVID-19 as of Monday afternoon.
Etiquette expert Elaine Swann says that in the modern era, handshakes remain an important part of business deals and socializing. Tampa Bay career and executive coach Dianne M. Kipp said she even has an exercise she does with clients that involves handshakes as a way to move past disagreements and strengthen bonds at work.
Shaking hands is still normally the proper way to greet someone in 2020, Swann said. However, its perfectly fine to hold off on shaking hands right now.How do you turn down a handshake without making it awkward? Swann said its all about honesty and body language.
Right now, Im not shaking hands, but its very nice to meet you, she advises telling people. She recommends signaling by clasping your own hands together, either in front or behind you, in anticipation of an unwanted hand. She also says that nodding politely can show youre still being cordial and are actually excited to meet someone. If you stick out your hand and get left hanging, she says dont take it personal and dont linger on it.
Bring up a new topic, and keep the conversation moving forward."A 2014 study showed fist bumps can spread 20 times fewer germs than a handshake, but Swann says you should never offer a fist, or an elbow bump, when the other person offered an open hand.

A friend suggested that women can curtsy instead.
And on your trip home you:
I’ve never felt the slightest inhibition to telling people to GFO to their faces, so refusing to shake hands isn’t a problem, personally.
This has become mass hysteria.
Per the CDC, during the 2018 flu season, 35,000 Americans died of seasonal flu.
Per the NYT (3/3/2020) 3,300 have died of China Flu *worldwide*.
No doubt, that number has come up a bit, especially in Iran, since 3/3, but its nowhere near seasonal flu stats.
CDC reports that, thus far, there have been 12,000 reported deaths from seasonal flu; they anticipate 20,000.
Children appear immune. The people who have died had weak immune systems. Many Americans have had it and never knew it.
President Trump started prepping in *January*. He essentially quarantined America, taking the bold and decisive move of restricting travel.
The administration could not be more transparent.
A vaccine was created in 42 days. Count on it being slammed through the FDA as an *emergency* drug. The Trump administration has done it before with a drug that was efficacious in suicide prevention (I was watching this one).
Ask idiot dems to tell you *specifically* what they would have done differently. Mostly they rant about President Trump calling China Flu a *hoax*. They cant produce evidence of that, of course.
Or say;
“Thought You
Found a FRiend,
Ha!”
I just say I’m not touching anyone during the Flu season....no “etiquette” needed.
Pull both hands back and say, “eeewwwww.”
LOL!
Yes, I remember ‘barely brushing the hand’, not actually kissing.
I haven’t seen it or had it happen to me in decades; it was mostly foreign men, and in one case a lovely gesture from a man I had helped with a problem who’d been treated badly by someone else previously - a gesture of sweet gratitude and respect, not anything ‘romantic’.
Well, you'r right.
This morning's news: 111,000 cases of the virus worldwide.
With the 7,530,000,000 people in the world I DO have to be SOOOOO careful.
:o)
And men bow like the 3 stooges?
Lol. With 111,000 cases in the world? Of course, with 7,530,000,000 people in the world I DO have to be SOO careful.
Isn’t that Chief Roaring Chicken from F Troop? ;-)
one highlights of an otherwise dreadful modern-day SNL is they got Larry David to play Bernie Sanders in 2016. I think he was born to play the role. All he needed to do was comb his hair with a balloon.
I don’t know if he’s repriced the role for the 2020 elections though.

“... a gesture of sweet gratitude and respect...”
The world needs more of these. I too have been honored with such. It is lovely to be reminded that kindness is a most worthy virtue.
The etiquette of bowing is full of minefields for the unwary. Mind you it does have advantages over the curtsy.
When you see a handshake coming your way just start coughing uncontrollably into your hand.
