It wouldn’t surprise me if they took everyone’s temp on the way back in.

At some point, the walls will come down and this whole thing turns from containment to mop up.

I would maybe give the kids two weeks, and then go online.

I am going to list (my opinion, but I believe fully supported by data) the most common false statements I am hearing from some FR posters and in some cases public officials:

(1) This is about old people and I won't be affected

That is very misleading since every age group catches the disease and the same rate and spreads at the same rate. While old people (and people with a medical history of diabetes, pneumonia, weakened immune system etc.) are much more likely to die from the disease, the sickness for anyone can be very severe and very unpleasant.

(2)This just affects Asians. They catch it more and they spread it more.

There is _no_ data supporting this. Folks around the world are getting the virus, spreading the virus, and in the worst case, dying from the virus.

(3)The number of cases is X.

This can never be correct. We only have data for the number of cases that tested positive. That creates an upper limit that is almost always far below the actual number of cases. The number of deaths is a number far more likely to be accurate (except if we don't trust the reporting country, as in Iran, for example).

(4)Masks don't work. They are hard to use. They are dangerous to use.

Imho these are myths spread by governments who don't have enough masks for the public. Health care workers wear masks for a reason, and nurses are trained with a minute and a half video. Imho when mask manufacturing is ramped up, then .gov will _want_ the public to use masks.

(5) This is just the flu, bro.

Unlike the flu, we don't have a vaccine. The rate of spread of this disease has no natural limits since there is no natural immunity. For the 15% to 20% of the infected several hospitalization is required with a major drain on health care workers and equipment. Most hospital beds and rooms are not currently set up to handle the ventilator and other requirements needed to assist patients with the disease. We do not know whether warm weather will stop the spread of this disease. There are many other differences as well.

(6) This disease can not be spread as an aerosol.

There are several scientific studies we have discussed here which prove (imho) that this disease can spread as an aerosol.

(7) There is no need for further testing in a location once the disease has reached epidemic proportion in that location

This is wrong since it distorts the statistics. In addition you want to test quarantined people in a building or area so you can release them from that local quarantine (like a cruise ship or an apartment building)!

Feel free to add to the list.

“maybe they are at the store stocking up?”

Or busy trampling others in a stampede somewhere.

Coronavirus in Kentucky: Gov. Beshear says 3 new cases in Jefferson, Fayette and Harrison counties
Tessa Duvall, Louisville Courier Journal Published 5:48 p.m. ET March 8, 2020 | Updated 6:26 p.m. ET March 8, 2020

Three new cases of COVID-19 coronavirus have been confirmed in Jefferson, Fayette and Harrison counties, Gov. Andy Beshear said Sunday evening.

About an hour and a half prior to the governor’s broadcast, the state lab in Frankfort confirmed three new positive cases of the novel coronavirus.

“All of the individuals are in isolation,” he said. “We will have no more information on these cases at this time because this is that new.”

Even if they do go on break, this could be worse as students tend to go to beaches and elsewhere to party. Imagine how many people that could become infected.

No, we are laughing at all of you on the thread trying to out do each other in your doom and gloom mode

Quite entertaining in a macabre kind of way

I am 7 miles from Jefferson County, Kentucky (greater Louisville area, but live across the Ohio River in southern Indiana), so this is getting real close to home, now. Thanks for the update!!!

The Saudis are taking this _very_ seriously.

They really should take the next step, though, and ban all incoming flights from _anywhere_.

You should be off trampling or being trampled in some stampede right now.

#7, testing.

That’s a tricky one.
There’s no point in doing exploratory testing in an area that’s been hit. Still some good for areas that are in containment mode, which some areas will be in for a while.
Testing for healthcare and responders of course.
Testing may be good for CDL truck drivers.

Lots to consider... hope someone more proficient than me is looking out of the box.

If your town gets quarantined, what will happen and what should you do to get through it?

I'm sure folks will call you kook for suggesting a person should prepare for such a thing as "your town gets quarantined". I'm also sure the residents of Northern Italy, who would have called you a kook just a few weeks ago, would not do so today.

It is quite easy at this point to keep making "another run" to grab an item you think of, or something you consumed over the past 3 or 4 weeks since you began stocking up. But if quarantines are implemented, or even if you have a outbreak in your town, restocking might not be an option.

Social life will have to be mostly by distance, as will church. Many churches already stream their services, and I could see church services being like sporting events, being held without congregation/crowds. If your church doesn't have this capability, it might be a good time to establish it.

Also, this “expert” gets a lots of the basics right, even though imho he does not have the courage to follow his own logic to its conclusion (quarantine, quarantine, quaratine).
Worth a look, about twenty minutes:

Feds don’t gotta work on no weekends. The have announced a truce with the virus to stand down for two days, kinda like that truce with the Taliban.

to quarantine my town, half a dozen freeway exits would have to be closed, as well as over a dozen throughways into other areas. No kids, but being Calif, no doubt they’d go straight to facetime or GoToMeeting or whatever the kids are using these days. Social activities are out the window. Both my spouse and I are at risk from age and underlying issues.

I think the young people should have to stay at home so they won’t infect anyone or create more superspreaders running around allegedly infecting our dogkids. It’s easier to tell when an old person has the disease and easier to isolate. We should be the ones singing ‘Free Bird’.

But, I guess us old people have to bear the burden. Although we do tend to have more hobbies than young people and can probably handle ‘solitary’ easier than a young’un.
