Flowers are blooming here in sunny, yet chilly (70 degrees?) mid-Gulf Florida. As noted last week, I’ve been using my MicroGreen seed germinator to germinate flower seeds. Works great.
Had two Sweet Potatoes sprout in the kitchen so instead of throwing them out, I dug a hole in the garden and some very nice purple vines are now growing.
Went to a local hospital thrift store and found 32 copies of “The English Garden”. Published in the U.K. from early 2000. A great magazine for garden dreaming. Found at a local yard sale last week, about 25 copies of “The Garden Gate”. A very good garden magazine published in the U.S.
The Sunflowers are now about 3’ high. Saved some Golden Cantaloupe seeds a while back so I’m going to try them in the MicroGreen germinator and if they sprout, into the flower garden they go.
Lots of my Orchids are getting ready to bloom. Normally I buy them in the Walmart “Orphan” area in the back. Remove them from the nasty confining tiny pots and mount them on a wooden plank with some moss. Lightly spray them every couple days to soak the wood and the moss...Bob
A chipmunk came up on my back porch; haven't seen one since last fall. -tom
I love this thread. Can’t garden any more but do enjoy others’ successes.
Everyone seems to be off to a good start so far! I started lettuces, spinach and arugula in flats in the greenhouse the other day - now the trick is to remember to open UP the greenhouse on sunny days so I don’t cook anyone, LOL!
Started my sweet and hot peppers under grow lights inside. Tomatoes, next week, then something else every week after that.
We’re to hit 59 tomorrow, partly sunny. It got close to 50 today, but really windy...which is good for drying things out!
I really TRIED to be a good girl, and I was for the most part, but Baker Creek got to me and I ordered $40 worth of seed from them - I’ll post pictures of a few things, later.
Goofed off all day with my Posse in town - had breakfast out, then went to the ‘provisions’ store and got some great deals on whole chicken, stuffed chicken breasts, cheese and Nuski’s BACON! Did some thrift shopping, which is always a cheap thrill. :)
Will be ordering my rain barrel soon! The downspout is all in place - just needs the barrel to receive the overflow off of the new metal roof. It will be elevated with a tap on the side so I can fill watering cans.
Sap flow is sporadic at best this season, so we probably won’t have as much maple syrup, but we still have a few quarts from last year. You need cold nights and warm days to get a good flow, and it’s not getting cold enough at night, already.
Don’t forget to ‘SPRING AHEAD’ with your clocks, tonight. I’m glad to see it here already, but I sure wish they would do away with that particular brand of stupid. ;)
We are having the most unusual spring weather here on Humboldt Bay. Lots of sunshine but no rain or snow in the mountains so we are almost 50% below “normal”. Lady Bender will have a hip joint repair in about 3 weeks so our garden will be slim to none...
This time of year I concentrate on cutting back/down things I don’t want to grow: brambles, weed trees.
Crocus is out, but too early to plant.
Yellow Pear Tomato and Purple Kohlrabi were FREE! My garden is going to be VERY colorful this season; lots of purples and oranges. Yay!

I’ve been seeing American Robins for a few days, now. The other night I dreamed that my Orioles were back with a vengeance and I was rushing around getting the feeders full of orange ‘juice’ and grape jelly, LOL!
I really MISS when I was younger and dreamed of, Oh, I don’t know...Tom Selleck or Paul Newman, LOL!
Now I just dream about feeding the birds and growing Kale.

On a gardening-related note, I started a bunch of tomatoes in Dixie cups. Not too late to start them, I think. Only one is a hybrid (VF). Blight attacks mid to late August and I am lucky to get a ripe fruit or two before then; some varieties succumb very quickly, unfortunately.
The first week of March was warm and dry here in Central Missouri. The rains returned last night and look to be on us for a good part of the coming week.
I spent most of Saturday doing yard work. Spread another 20 ton of crushed limestone on the driveway. Took the tomato cages down and cleaned them up.
Dragged Mr. Clarence out of the barn and gave him a good rinsing with the pressure washer. I’ve collected all of the parts needed to give him a good tune-up. Thought I might get started on that this week, but I don’t have room in the shop to put him inside so that work will wait until conditions improve.
So pretty! And here I’m all excited that I over-wintered a rose in the greenhouse!
Everything here is still muddy & gray. But the Robins are back! :)
I’ve been doing basic gardening chores the past week. Today I’m cutting TP rolls in half to put in a flat, fill with dirt and give my peas and Sweet Peas (flowers) a jump-start.
Beau has started on the beds around the greenhouse for me! There are stakes in the ground and I saw him using his level and everything! :)
Rainy here today, but still warm - into the high 40’s. The rest of the week here in SW ‘Sconny looks mild and dry.
He has also collected 12 gallons of maple sap so far.
I played in my greenhouse most of yesterday. Happy, Happy!
As I recall, there were one or two people here looking for Carol Deppe varieties. I’ve been putting together a list of alternative sources for her seeds.
