And China knew all along that this would happen here.

Gee, do you think they will have a bit of advantage after they extinguish the virus in their country by locking up their citizens and letting them die, while we send ambulances to every case?

Rate of discovery—correct—that is all we have at this point.

Honestly I am not sure how you figure out the rate of spread.

HA! It does. Interesting.
IDK. Still ‘rumorish’...
Would like to see something solid. China’s whole fate resides on this.

After reading todays thread I have decided I am going to go get more supplies

For a number of reasons including:

Buy them before Wuhan is coughed all over them

Buy them so I have to go out less

Buy them because people are going to panic as the numbers grow as tests become available and things might be hard to get

Buy them before people are quarantined all over the place and there are limited workers to make, ship , and stock the goods.

Buy them for my peace of mind that I have what I need for two months.

I highly doubt this just blows over in a week

And I dont want to catch this disease because we dont know the long term repercussions after you get well. I am not in my 20s

Going to call NCL about my Alaksa cruise tomorrow and see what they have to say. I am not going to get stuck on a ship from hell leaving from Seattle Washington.

I think Cuomo is seeing an ugly future (don’t know how far in the future) where he has to bring the New York state National Guard to seal off NYC.

Because Manhattan is an island it is doable—and Long Island is an island as well.

Well they certainly don’t need to advise the public of every case they test, I agree.

But, regarding the 20%. I can understand the author’s viewpoint. Here’s a few parts from it.

“ While it’s incredible that we have immediate access to COVID-19 updates, there’s one big problem with the way the media has been covering the outbreak. We have reporters, social media influencers and other public figures trying to reassure us that we’re probably going to be fine — well, most of us anyway. All of us except the elderly and immunocompromised.

“Don’t worry,” they say. “Wash your hands and carry on,” they advise. “You’re young, it’s not like you’ll die or anything! It’s just the elderly and people with compromised immune systems that will be affected!”

As if people in those groups don’t matter. People like me. I have primary immunodeficiency. Hi.

I won’t lie, COVID-19 concerns me, just as it concerns my neighbors and friends who have stronger immune systems. Luckily, the infection control procedures recommended to the general public — things like thorough and frequent hand washing, covering one’s mouth when sneezing and cleaning surfaces that are frequently touched — are standard operating procedure for a lot of people like me. I didn’t need to raid my local store for hand sanitizer and bleach wipes because I already have a cupboard full of that stuff. I’m doing my best to remain vigilant, keep my doctors’ appointments and avoid crowds. ....

.. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like a lot of news outlets are following this sound practice. They’re going on about how only “old folks’ homes” and “sick people” will be at risk. When did it become acceptable to comfort the public by reassuring them that “Hey, you’re not the one who might die”? Or to assume that it will all be cool because only “those people over there” will have issues? Aside from the fact that it’s actually not true — being healthy doesn’t grant anyone guaranteed immunity from potential complications — have they considered, even for a second, that those “old folks” and “sick people” are listening, reading or watching too, and don’t deserve to have their lives considered afterthoughts?

Instead of shrugging off more medically vulnerable populations, has it ever dawned on any of these pundits to offer some advice to help? You know, like telling people with robust immune systems to be especially careful because they could still pass COVID-19 to an immunocompromised person? Or insisting that public facilities be proactive about ensuring their restrooms are cleaned often and always stocked with soap and working faucets? How about advocating for more sick day coverage and fewer repercussions for workers who need to take time off to avoid spreading COVID-19 or other illnesses? Or reminding people to check on homebound neighbors and relatives?

I could care less about China’s fate.

We’re talking our fate here!

If I catch this virus, I will die. I’m 61 and one of the people with “underlying health conditions”.

Trump should nuke Beijing now. I would like to see that before I die.

You’re just a kid. Have patience, relax.
We’ll eventually face what China faces.

Lots of differences here though. Sanitation, hygiene, environmental, regulatory. I think they’re in our favor (lord knows we pay enough for them), but we still will face the same as China at heart.

The article and the media coverage need a bit more nuance. :-)

One area (just one, because my fingers are tired of typing) is that most people who get seriously ill won’t die. They will be absolutely miserable and feel like total garbage with severe pneumonia like symptoms. They will be isolated from friends and family for what will probably be the worst month of their life. But, they won’t die.

That will be folks (almost all adults) of all ages.

UTIs used to make my mom’s dementia go to new levels. Not fun in elderly women.

See my post 869.

You actually have about a 5% chance of dying if you catch the disease (at your age and condition). Most likely you will live through it if infected (and wish you were dead)!

I’m a geezer, but there are geezers older than me who pull that “you’re just a kid” line on me.
I’m gonna point that out to the next kid, or bunch of kids, I talk to.

“Going to call NCL about my Alaksa cruise tomorrow and see what they have to say. I am not going to get stuck on a ship from hell leaving from Seattle Washington.”

Don’t get your hopes up. You’ll get port fees and excursion money back, plus any refund if the trip is several months or more out...that’s it. NCL stuck to the letter of the law when we canceled, and I don’t really blame them. They, like all the cruise lines, will be in Bankruptcy Court by this time next year, so they might as well hang on to whatever cash they still have.

“After reading todays thread I have decided I am going to go get more supplies”

You’re a bit late, but still ahead of 95% of the country. Two other reasons: having to wait in line with people of unknown health (or lack thereof), and having to deal with rationing. They go together.

But get moving! Not much time left before the panic does set in.

I won’t comment on your cruise plans other than to say that I would never get on a cruise ship even before this virus broke out!

I’ve already done all the buying.

So I’m sitting here all alone, watching my retirement 401K do down the tubes, washing my hands so much that they are chapped, and realizing that I will die in the next few weeks. Nothing I can do about it. I’m one with previous health conditions.

I guess my wonderful black lab will get the virus too and will have to be put down.

The worst thing is that I’ll never be able to spend all the money I set aside for retirement. I guess that runs in the family, as my father died suddenly at 65, and could never get the benefit of his pensions and SS.

Whatever...

Exactly. But, the minority ‘are people too’.

I am that minority for the flu or this. Heck, a cold could do me in. I don’t have much of an immune system. So, whether it’s the L or S strain, I’m treating it the same. But, I’m also doing nothing different than I do any other day. I’m not even vaccinated from measles right now. Anyone who knows me, knows my situation snd would not ever come over with a sniffle.

My cruise was free from Caesars so all the incidentals will be refunded...like the tax on the free beverage package. The only thing in question is the some kind of admin fee which they will apply to your next cruise. Less than 200 bucks.

I guess the message is that “we” should not have the government as part of our plan.

I assume my family will help me. I will help them. I can help some neighbors.

Aside from that the barbarians are coming to the gates.

Lots of differences here all right.

All it takes is one idiot on “home quarantine” to ignore it and go out and spread the virus. In China, they grab this idiot, throw him in a van, and take him somewhere he will never be seen again.

All your sanitation belong to us! We won’t have time to care about where our sanitation is going. We’ll be dead.

Sure, Medicare mailed it to all subscribers. Useless info to me, though. Should I experience either mild or serious symptoms with deteriorating condition, I will refuse to cooperate with any attempt to transport me to hospitalization. I don’t want to be intubated and don’t want to endure biopsy of lung tissue. And don’t want to deal with permanent organ damage if “recovered”. Would rather add another one to “score” column of WA State. P.S. currently “on” numerous OTC preparations, hopefully to obviate the above. Also have Rx medications in store if things deteriorate.
