South by Southwest, the annual tech, film and music conference in Austin, will proceed as planned despite concerns about coronavirus, Austin public health officials said during a press conference on Wednesday.

"It's important for us to remember at this stage that we're actively evaluating mass gatherings on a daily basis," said Mark Escott, the interim medical director and health authority for Austin Public Health. "Right now there's no evidence that closing South by Southwest or other activities is going to make this community safer. We're constantly monitoring that situation." The organizers behind SXSW, which is scheduled to take place from March 13 to March 22, had come under public pressure in recent days to cancel the event. Several high-profile attendees had also dropped out, citing concerns about the virus. Twitter was the first big company to pull out of the event, citing its new policy restricting all business travel because of the virus. Facebook (FB), Intel (INTC), Vevo and Mashable soon followed suit.

At least one person of interest in Travis county where there is one there’s 4 or 5 more with symptoms too mild to warrant a trip to the doctor n that however doesn’t by any means they are less infectious than someone with worse symptoms this virus sheads for many days before the person is “sick”

https://www.zdnet.com/article/coronavirus-update-2020-tech-conference-cancellations-and-travel-bans/

There’s a LOT of various conferences, etc. that are being cancelled.

And yet, no one gives a nickle for the every year flu. I just started a new IT job in November at a community college system. I can honestly say I do not believe that my entire team has been at work for 2 normal work days since I’ve been here. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, MLK, President’s day, sewer line break, 8 foot water main break the next week, spring break coming up, then Good Friday, and Memorial Day in May. We’re possibly working through Spring Break, but if we do, that gives everyone who works the option of shifting that week to any other 5 days.

Man, I think I like living off the government largess.
