What unusual things are you observing caused by the Coronavirus / COVID-19 scare?
Last night I was walking in downtown Menlo Park, California from 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM. It was a beautiful, warm evening. But the town was almost deserted and the restaurants were maybe 1/3 to 1/2 full. There were a few bums on the streets pushing their shopping carts full of treasures, but they didn't seem concerned about catching an illness. One Asian woman walked past me on the almost-deserted sidewalk wearing a facemark.
This afternoon (about 3 PM) I took our dog walking on the Charleston Slough levee in Mountain View. It was about 75 degrees and a glorious blue sky. This is very close to Google world headquarters and usually the levees are packed with walkers, joggers, bicyclists and runners. Today I passed maybe a total of ten people in the 2.5 miles we walked. At one point, I could look a half mile ahead of me and a half mile behind me and see no one. That is really weird. The funny thing is that, with no people on the levee and with the clean fresh air on the bay, you probably have lower risk of contracting the disease than anywhere else on the Peninsula. Go figure!
Driving out of that part of Mountain View on a normal day is really hard because of all of the Google traffic and commuting busses. Today there was very light traffic headed away from the bay back toward Mountain View.
Events being canceled left and right.
Italy and South Korea in on this as well?
On the contrary. China is making the numbers less and less because they keep changing the conditions on who to include that caught Covid-19.(They have moved the goalposts at least 5 or 6 times)
Also, upon death they will decide what you died from. If you had Covid-19 and heart problems, for example, when you died then the official cause of death is heart problems.
You also have the unknown number of people who died at home simply because there was no hospital bed for them. Or others who caught it and died when China was denying anything was wrong.
Nothing.
Hillbillies are not hysterics.
Want me mail ya some?
:D
Basically you can sum up this topic as:
“GEE WIZ COSTCO IS OUT OF TP AND WIPES!!!”
like do people on FR shop anywhere else?
I’ve read that only the upper calls have comparable medical care in Italy, of all places! Don’t know access to sanitation and information available to all others. I don’t know the availability and distribution of medicine in SK. Multiple factors in play world wide - have to know so much more than we can get from headlines. Today I read that there was a “sudden jump” in deaths in the US and then found out later that they were all medically compromised and in a nursing home. Details matter. I think the White House website has the details down best.
Only if you’re in Baltimore near UMB
No one is going to any sushi or chinese restaurants around here in West GA
Bkmk
It will be interesting to see how the NCAA deals with March Madness.
“I believe China is trying to make this disease seem worse than it is because it allows them to lock up whomever they want, disappear them and claim they died of corona.”
Interesting thought. But here’s the thing... China already has the power to ‘disappear’ anybody they want. Sure there are limits. But if they felt they were ‘limited’ in their power anywhere and they needed to use the virus as ‘cover’ that place would be Hong Kong.
That's my tin foil theory.
I’m less than 3 miles from the Life Care center in the Seattle area where most of the deaths are from. But 2 or 3 others as well. And also near the hospital where they were all treated.
Nobody has disinfecting wipes, rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer.
Grocery stores are 90% out of TP, 50% paper towels, but kleenix is doing okay.
Costco yesterday had a one pack limit on TP and paper towels, but it looked like they had a huge supply in the chained-off area so they can resupply the shelves.
Saw several Asians with five or six packs of TP despite the one pack limit. I didn’t see if they got them taken away at the counter. They better have. (Asians in my encounters think the rules and morality don’t apply to them).
Rice and beans in the stores are out. I glanced down that aisle in Costco - it looked low.
I went in to stock up on dog food for one of my kids. Plenty of dog food and frozen foods and deli food. I’m already stocked up on canned foods, etc - so don’t know about them.
I did walk by the area with all the nuts, jerky, power bars, etc. - that was full.
I did want to pick up another bottle of elderberry juice, but I didn’t see any.
Hand soap was low, and the guy said that was all they had. They had quite a bit of bleach still. Lots of Hydrogen peroxide. (Both are good at destroying viruses - bleach is better).
I believe China is trying to make this disease seem worse than it is because it allows them to lock up whomever they want, disappear them and claim they died of corona.
Maybe.
I still have the nagging suspicion that the virus escaped from that lab in Wuhan and the Chinese are scrambling to hide the fact and contain the damage.
The contamination you mention is because their response is overwhelmed and like any place else, they are not some monolithic paragons of correct behavior. They are probably worse than most.
Because they are such a closed and censored society, I guess we will never really know.
My daughter works the ER weekends as a nurse in a small hospital. She says they’re getting inundated with people who have the sniffles and demand to be tested for the Coronavirus.
The staff is getting tired of telling them a) We don’t have the test; b) Even if we had it, it’s very expensive; c) You just have a cold - go home and go to bed.
That's a pretty good point.
Our local Kroger and Safeway stores have plenty of TP and hand wipes.
I’m seeing a bunch of people living their lives and zero decrease in folks on the beaches/restaurants and other public places...traffic as heavy as ever and stocked grocery shelves - but there has been a shortage of some types of tomatoes and some stores have substandard green bell peppers.
I like it...
Zane Grey was one to paint a picture with words...but the guy who wrote “The Exorcist” should get mention too.
Interesting re: the cost of the test.
