VA tells Congress it is prepared for possible coronavirus outbreak in US
Top Department of Veterans Affairs leaders assured Congress Thursday VA is prepared in the event of an outbreak of coronavirus, specifically COVID-19, in the United States.
House Veterans Affairs Chairman Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., asked VA Secretary Robert Wilkie during a budget hearing Thursday if VA needed additional appropriations — more money — to ensure the department is able to respond, concerned that the federal government overall may be underprepared

If this develops into a pandemic, in which parts of the American health system break down, were going to have a different conversation, Stone said, adding that as of now, we see ourselves as well prepared

Look at Singapore. And watch Israel. The only two honest governments on the planet right now.
Add Korea to the honest government list, they are testing hundreds of thousands and put up the numbers andof locations of the infected. They are so on the ball they have drive up ten min tests have to be rapid pcr. They are putting our CDC and administration to shame.

Great question.
CDC Failed...on purpose...is MY guess.
Just wait till the US becomes a super spreader. Mexico might close our border lol.
Interesting that now there is some oversight (Pence) that things are getting done.

Today, Vice President Mike Pence announced the following individual to a key position on his team to combat the spread of the Coronavirus:
Ambassador Debbie Birx, to serve as the White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator.
Ambassador Birx is a world-renowned global health official and physician. She will be detailed to the Office of the Vice President and will report to Vice President Mike Pence. She will also join the Task Force led by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. She will be supported by the National Security Council staff. Dr. Birx serves as the U.S. governments leader for combatting HIV/AIDS globally and will continue to oversee this critical work through her able Deputy Angeli Achrekar, while bringing her interagency expertise and coordination that brought ground-breaking progress to the global HIV/AIDS pandemic to the Coronavirus response in the White House.
Ambassador Birx is a scientist, physician, and mom, with three decades of public health expertise, including virulent diseases, their vaccines, and interagency coordination. She has been utilizing the best science to change the course of the HIV pandemic and bring the pandemic under control, community by community and country by country. Her focus over three decades has been on HIV/AIDS immunology, vaccine research, and global health. She has developed and patented vaccines, including leading one of the most influential HIV vaccine trials in history. Three different Administrations across both political parties have relied on her knowledge and judgement. Ambassador Birx has previously coordinated the Army, Navy, and Air Force in their HIV/AIDS efforts and led the CDCs Division of Global HIV/AIDS, Center for Global Health, and their global implementation of the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief program. She has deep experience in coordinating across agencies. She has worked from the research bench to the clinic, but understands the primary focus must always be to reach the individuals most in need. She will bring her infectious disease, immunologic, vaccine research and interagency coordinating capacity to this position.
I’ll be paying ahead on our health insurance premium, just in case the family bill payer is sick when the April premium comes due . . . can’t give them any excuse not to cover us. Tax documents are going to be scanned and emailed this year rather than snail mailed to protect those on the other end.
Very true. We can actually get the clear picture from South Korea. The same thing could be occurring here soon or right now for all the CDC/P knows. After their falls, we should remember the governments that were true.
Interesting how fast things are getting done now. Well done, VP Pence, and President Trump for putting him on this.
It really makes me wonder now about the incompetence/ill-intent of the previous folks in charge.
There were a couple of times last night it looked like the President was ready to spit nails.
My guess, just a wild one, is the CDC demanded a certain accuracy. Primary concern, false positives or marginal positives. They wanted a low balling test.
The numbers from Korea and Singapore should give the true R0, and overall death rate the chicom numbers have been bogus from week one. Lets just pray our good friends and allies the Korean people can get this under control and snuffed out. It’s already here inside the USA the case in the wild near Travis AFB is just the tip of the iceberg once large scale testing starts the cases will pile up quickly they are already sick and in our hospitals just diagnosed as viral pneumonia not flu related.
False positives are an annoyance and and inconvenience for the person who has to be under quarantine while they show positive. False negatives are a deadly serious matter. 100 false positives are better than one false negative. Stock markets be damned test every case if you have more positives that are false so be it.
Yeah.
Everything is so interconnected now, socially, economically, and so on: It’s not even just “supply chain”. The ripple effects go on “forever”.
A lot of this on the economic side is, in “normal” times, just the economy trying to find its sweet spot in terms of efficiency. That effort can get distorted by politics, unbalanced trade deals, and so on, and also strengthened by technology, reasonable cooperation (but reasonable & fair competition, too!), among other things. All in all, it has been quite beneficial: I still find it rather incredible that - at this moment - one can buy a four star rated 4000k 43” LED TV for $160 at Wally World. Free shipping, if desired. Yeah, it’s not the “best”, and not the most reliable, but, still...
Where the system has been flawed, in terms of benefits vs. liabilities for most people, President Trump has been working to correct.
Unfortunately, highly tuned, efficient, complex systems usually have an Achilles heel or heels.
Wow. That is exactly what we need.
