Bruce Bochy reveals Madison Bumgarner went bear hunting, 'mano a mano'

Not many people know Madison Bumgarner as well as his former manager Bruce Bochy.

Bumgarner was only 19 years old when he made his major league debut for Bochy and the Giants in 2009. He spent 11 years taking the mound with Bochy manning the dugout in San Francisco. The two formed a close bond over more than a decade together, while winning three World Series championships.

But even Bochy seemed surprised by Bumgarner's rodeo alias "Mason Saunders" that he used over recent years in team-roping competitions. The Athletic reported Sunday that Bumgarner has participated in competitions under an alias, which had former teammates laughing a day later as they prepared to face Bumgarner's Arizona Diamondbacks.

"This is the first I'm hearing of Mr. Saunders," Bochy said to reporters.

While Bochy seemed coy on his knowledge of Mr. Saunders, he did hint at some other activities Bumgarner has found himself in outside of a baseball field.

"I mean there's some stories I do know that he probably wouldn't want me to share, with him bear hunting, and the tight situations he's gotten himself into," Bochy said Monday on KNBR's "Murph & Mac Show."

Three World Series rings, the greatest pitching performance in playoff history, Team Roping contestant and close quarters bear hunting.

Huevos Rancheros Grande.

Anyone know of a tougher, more American athlete than Madison Bumgarner?

It must be because of the name...

Hand to hand with a bear is kinda tough, unless it’s a very small bear, you’re built like a line backer and “hand to hand” is an euphemism for “armed with spear and/or sword and clad in plate armor”.

“greatest pitching performance in playoff history”

I have read that Mickey Lolich has a different opinion.

What he did to my Royals in the 14 Series should be a movie.

5 year $85 million contract....$17 million per year......Almost $1 million per game and all he does is throw a fricking ball......

Pro sports and their salaries have gotten too far out of line.......but yet the fans continue to support them.

See post #10.

Whitey Ford doesn’t hold those records.
Bumgarner does.

“What he did to my Royals in the 14 Series should be a movie.”

See #10 on the records he set in that series.

It had to be excruciating for a KC fan.

“...a shutout with no walks and at least eight strikeouts.”

That is expert pitching, for sure. The MLB batters are top-notch and shutting them out takes skill.

Sorry, Lew Burdette 1957 WS against the Yankees. Pitched and won games 2, 5 and 7. Three complete games against the Yankees, scores were 4-2, 1-0 and 5-0. He pitched with 4 days and then 3 days rest between games. Pitched 27 innings and gave up 2 runs, that’s an era of .079. No other performance has matched that.

It was painful, but it was phenomenal baseball. He made the 2014 Series a Classic.

No way SF wins that Series without him. You tip your cap to him, and comeback next year and take out your frustration on the NY Mets.

Depends on which kind of bears. Playing for the San Francisco Giants, he would only have to go across the bay to go mano a mano with some Golden Bears.

He wouldn’t have to cross the bridge to find “bears”, the Castro District is full of them...
