Los Angeles Times film critic Justin Chang said Friday on CNN that President Donald Trump mentioning the movie Gone With the Wind at his rally was a racist dog whistle.
Chang said, Its kind of unfortunate, I think, that we have a president whose entire presidency is founded on xenophobia and of course his comments are not surprising coming from someone who likes to dehumanize people of other cultures and people of color. So none of thats surprising.
He continued, Well, that whole thing, Gone with the Wind and Sunset Boulevard, that all smacks of a dog whistle hearkening back to an earlier era of Hollywood greatness. Look, we can love Gone with the Wind, and also acknowledge its the romantic view of the old South, which many people find problematic. That is another racist dog whistle as well.
He added, I think its real laziness on his part. He is just someone who is very lazy. I think to say that. You know, a lot of people say this, there are no movies being made in the present today that are as good as the classics that were made 50 or 60 years ago. And its totally fine that Trump is, you know, out of touch with popular culture. You know, he has or should have better things to do like running the country, but he really should think twice about speaking about things of which he is so woefully ignorant.

Your mother used the n-word all the time, didn't she? /sarc
His parents probably escaped Maoist China. Stop immigration now!
I have absolutely no idea what any of the present day movies are or have been for the past ten years. and it is not because I am ignorant. Hollywood left us a long time ago when they stopped entertaining and became liberal political activists,
One thing Trump isn't is lazy. This guy is an asshat
“But hey, it was 1939.”
The movie came out when the cultural reality was shaped by the wisdom of the court, a Plessy v Ferguson way of life. Black ministers were appealing to FDR to integrate the armed forces, which he did not. Truman integrated the armed forces and less than a generation after the movie Brown v Board of Education overruled Plessy. So was this movie depicting slavery as a “benevolent institution” a cultural viewpoint of some Americans, reflective of the 1860s, or 1939, or both?
Since I did not read the book, I would guess that the “beneficial” depiction of slavery was written therein and the movie was capturing that viewpoint.
These dog-whistler false-witness accusers are zealots, race hustlers, a mob, our modern day enraged, intellectually lazy book burners. They need a professional intervention and help.
Gone With The Wind is the most epic Americana movie I have ever seen in my life.
To Hell with anyone who claims it’s racist. Throw ‘em in the ocean, don’t care, I’d rather have GWTW than any or all of them.
Justin Chang.... what happened to Kenneth Turan? Or Charles Champlin? Of course my favorite movie reviewer of all time is Stephen Hunter.
“...To Sir with Love...”
...as well as the classic “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”.
Since I have low confidence that either film would help many of them, they don’t have to get back to me.
I always thought Hattie’s character was one of the wisest and most interesting in the movie.
So I’m a racist.
I think I'll binge watch all of Sleep 'n Eat's movies. If I have time, I might also throw in some Stepin Fetchit flicks.
Your analysis is really insightful. I have never thought of that before, but it is so true.
Did they not hear Elizabeth Warren say during the debate that black and brown people are needed for childcare.she is a racist and degrading.
Apparently too few actually got that.
lol....nice try.....
This was dog whistle from this schmuck telling the world he hates Trump even if as a “Film critic” he has to attack the 6th best movie ever made to do it.
Chang is a Rooskie asset.
Hollywood hasn’t put out anything I would buy a ticket to see in over 20 years.
Their idea of ‘diversity’ is worse than Affirmative Action hiring.
The only way they can keep the public thinking that they have something to offer is to keep raising prices so their overall revenue doesn’t show a distinct drop.
DJT should appear at a press conference with a gold whistle on a chain tie clip.
