Those people are still around. Bad mouthing EV's.
This article (complete with detailed maintenance log) is a unbiased look at what it cost to run a Tesla for 400,000 miles.
Basically as cheap, if not cheaper, than other luxury cars.
Missing from this article is the tens of thousands of dollars NOT spent on gasoline. Nor do I see, on the flip side, the thousands of dollars spent on electricity.
But taking the cost of gas vs. electricity away - The costs were impressive. In a good way.
400,000 miles on the original battery!
I’ll not bother reading it. I’ll take your word for it.
But....I’ll wager there is no accounting for the environmental harm that the EV generates in mining and toxic waste disposal - a looming nightmare which hasn’t begun to be really felt. Or, I’m guessing the money confiscated from the taxpayer to lower the selling price. You can buy a lot of gas with someone else’s $7,000. Also not taking into account any other government subsidies involved.
Do I hate EVs? No, not at all. You like them, you can afford them, then buy them.
Two things I want to see:
- The real environmental impact of building and disposing of these vehicles and their materials & the admission that the electricity is not generated by pollution free pixie dust. No more BS green lies about EVs. They are not green.
- EVs standing on their own without any government (my) money
Just today I happened to look at the CR reliability reports on a number of cars, including Tesla.
The S had a lot of problems, the X was far worse, but the 3 was excellent.
Interesting.
I don’t have time to read the article but does it include road use taxes?
I mean fair road use taxes, not what may or may not be charged. This is another subsidy.
“$29,000 worth of repairs” over 400,000 miles.
That is expensive. I spent $9,500 worth of repairs over 350,000 miles on my 02 Hundai. The Tesla brakes alone were $2,000
$29,000 worth of repairs. That is a lot.
I could buy 2 gas cars.
My newish 2016 Honda Accord Sport has 45,000+ miles on it.
So far just air filters and a oil change.
More expense to come.
But how do you drive an electric car 10,000 miles per month?
Try affording driving a BMW or Audi or worse yet an italian car for 400k miles.
It gets expensive, quick.
How about mining for the ingtredients of the battery? Mining tailings can be toxic to the environmeent.
29000 in repair costs doesn’t impress me.
Many of us just can’t see spending the extra bucks 9and having others pay part of it via “government incentives”, and then dealing with the inconvenience of not being able to take a trip that only requires 10 minute rest/gas stops....if we get stuck and run out of gas, a trip to the nearest station and a gallon of gas in a can will have us back in business - if an EV gets stuck, it’s either a tow to a charging station or having a vehicle equipped with charging capabilities coming out and sitting long enough to get the juice to reach a charging station.
Demand remains high, contrary to the occasional FUD that gets out there; Tesla has had the Shanghai plant open for just a few months, and has had to cope with the coronavirus chaos, saw sales drop in China as well due to the outbreak, but has taken over one third of EV sales there; Musk is scouting locations for the cybertruck / model Y plant, visited Nashville, has considered Texas.
