Trump pardons Eddie DeBartolo Jr. over gambling fraud case

President Trump granted clemency to former San Francisco 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. for his conviction more than two decades ago in a gambling fraud scandal, the White House announced Tuesday.

DeBartolo, 73, gave up control of the 49ers in 2000 over his involvement in a gambling fraud case with former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards.

Rice, who won three Super Bowls with the 49ers, told reporters at the White House that “I take my hat off to Donald Trump for what he did.”

If Trump could only restore DeBartolo as owner, instead of the awful Yorks.

Eddie’s a crook who paid his players under the table to get around the salary cap. I guess Trump has his reasons, but screw that guy.

Jerry Rice, the Hall-of-Fame receiver who played with the 49ers from 1985 to 2000, was on hand for the announcement with former San Francisco teammates Ronnie Lott and Charles Haley and NFL legend Jim Brown.
Rice has always been a class act, and keeps his comments focused on football instead of politics. He sent a single pro Trump tweet once (and was of course attacked), but has otherwise stayed quiet. Jim Brown has been been a vocal supporter of Trump and has called on black Americans to get off the plantation. It's sad that so few black Americans are willing to stand against the mob and speak up for their beliefs. So many more could be inspired, or at least open their eyes and minds.

Well that’s nice. Does he know about a General named Flynn and Roger Stone that were railroaded in his name?

In poorly excepting the story, you missed the most important sentence.

Jerry Rice, the Hall-of-Fame receiver who played with the 49ers from 1985 to 2000, was on hand for the announcement with former San Francisco teammates Ronnie Lott and Charles Haley and NFL legend Jim Brown.

Yes to Shoeless s per wiki.

In 1921, a Chicago jury acquitted Jackson and his seven teammates of wrongdoing.

O.J. was convicted of a crime and in jail when Obama was president. Why would Obama pardon him? He was nothing to Obama, and Obama said he didn’t like football.

DeBartolo sure knew how to work around a salary cap... Dwight Clark was way underpaid, then would show up at the offices in the off-season and push a broom for a LOT of (mob) money :) that hard work (and the NFL’s blind-eye) sure lead to a legacy of winning!

Not to worry, if they ever get around to sentencing Flynn and Stone I believe a pardon will be issued before the jailers issue them a orange jump suit.

You have a valid point. Nothing to pardon him for.

I guess it would be symbolic, to try to suggest he be in the MLB HOF?

But Rose knew what he was doing. Baseball has been sensitive about gambling since 1919.
