Washington (AFP) A senior US health official said Sunday that more than 40 Americans on a quarantined cruise ship in Japan have been infected with the deadly coronavirus.
Forty of them have gotten infected, Anthony Fauci, a senior official at the National Insitutes for Health said on CBS Face the Nation show.

I defended keeping the people on the Cruise Ship, but I honestly
thought the experts would make wise decisions and prevent what has
taken place.
What a screw-up.
Not since obama imported active Ebola cases...Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Some of the cruise line slogans need to be reworked.
Experience the magic onboard.
We put the romance back into cruising.
Youll love where we take you.
We live it. Youll love it.
This is way more than a cruise.
The Celebrity treatment.
A different kind of cruise.
We live it. You might.

I would think any place with a ventilation system between rooms would be a bad idea.
I mean, the real thing to do, party like its 1399, tow it out beyond 200 miles and sink it.
Failing that, there was no right solution, all the choices had possibly bad outcomes and there was no right basis to choose.
Who in their right mind would sign up for a cruise these days? I wouldnt go even if the cabins were free.
If you are stuck on a cruise ship with sick people, it seems logical that cross-infections will be high. Cruise ships have thousands of people packed in close quarters. Besides common ventilation systems, everyone (including staff) touches the same dining tables, chairs, doorknobs, buffet carts, slot machines, etc. etc.
Perhaps the older and/or larger cruise ships need redesigning or retiring. Some newer ships iirc have atriums.
It's a marketing challenge to be sure. "Thrill cruise on the S.S. Petri Dish!" could be a hard sell unless it's around Halloween. If I had any stock in cruise lines I'd be short-selling like a fiend.
40 out of 400 IIRC, about a 10% infection rate but not all of them are symptomatic. If there's any good to be gleaned from this mess it's that at least we'll be getting hard numbers unfiltered by Chinese political bosses. That's mighty cold comfort for the patients and their families despite the fact that they'll be getting the best of care.
Don’t forget elevator buttons and menus.
IMHO. Send the cruise ship out to sea and sink it before these 40 can reproduce!
“I honestly thought the experts would make wise decisions”
I guess I am too cynical.
Menus...take wipes with you EVERYWHERE and use them
I would have had my vent closed, with as many towels over it as I could manage. Same with the door.
Living like a sardine isn’t that bad if done right, when the alternative is something like this.
I agree. It is a now-win no matter what you do.
I wouldn’t have been leaving my room.
They could send down some cereal for a few weeks.
I’d cover the vents too.
This is a high stakes game.
Act like your life depends on it.
Yeah, a little naivete goes a long ways for me these days...
