MLB considers radical changes to playoff format, including top teams picking their opponents: report
NY Daily News ^ | 11 February 2010 | Bradford William Davis

MLB’s plan would add two new wild card teams to the American and National League, boosting the total amount of playoff teams from 10 to 14, per ESPN. Mirroring the NFL, the AL and NL top seed would get a first-round bye, while remaining division winners and wild cards face each other in a best-of-three.

More radical is a proposed system that would allow for division winners to pick their opponents, a selection that would be televised live on the final night of regular-season games.

The season is long enough as it is.

I know the arguments for keeping 162 games in the regular season, relating to season statistics and records. But how much do statistics and records matter?

For example, we may never see another pitcher win 300 games in a career, because of limits on pitch counts and expanded pitching staffs. So how meaningful would it be to keep a sacrosanct 162 games to make such comparisons?

To squeeze a few more dollars from the stpoopid fans?

That's the only reason. MLB has to pay those outrageous (and getting more outrageous every day) salaries somehow.

Those mid-November games in New York and Boston should be entertaining.

Are you opposed to people being able to quit their current job and go work for someone else?

They need to add a base.

They would have to completely overhaul the dating score system.

Agreed. Cut out 1 week or regular season (154), but 1/2 of the teams generate increased attendance throughout the year because they’re vying for a playoff spot.

Currently only 5 advance in each league and 1 is gone after day 1. Room for more.
It appears 8 would advance, with 11+/- likely in the division chase.

I don’t follow NBA but it seems they include even one more level of playoffs than this MLB proposal does.

The NHL has had the same sort of problem for all of these years. When I began watching that league seriously, the playoffs went to about Victoria Day (Canada) or just before Memorial Day (United States). Now it is into about mid June and you get some idiots that want some sort of a mini season during the summer. And to think that my Dad grew up with six teams with four making the playoffs and the Stanley Cup was awarded by about Mother’s Day.

Am I the only one who sees this as a distraction from the sign stealing scandal that punished zero players involved?

They need to add a base.

Exactly, they could call it safe-space base, from there the player could tweet out to his fans asking if he should stay or steal the next base.

It's a brilliant idea.

So they play 162 - or 154, whatever - to eliminate 4 teams.
It’s as bad as the NHL and NBA.

Best solution - add 2 teams (the talent is already diluted), make four 8-team leagues, no interleague play, 154 game schedule, and have 4 winners who do two playoffs to get to the World Series.

Season over by October 25.

No more teams with 82-80 records getting into playoffs.

Sounds like a way for teams such as the Pittsburgh Pirates to cash-in on playoffs from time to time despite spending little money on talent.

So MLB is intentionally trying to come up with another way to piss people off?
