Vomiting voyagers: Cruise ship returns to US from Caribbean after 300 passengers suffer gastroenteritis
UK Daily Mail ^ | February 11, 2020 | Jack Elsom

An American cruise ship riddled with vomiting passengers has been denied entry to its Caribbean destination and is steaming back to the United States.

More than 300 on-board have come down with gastroenteritis, an uncomfortable stomach bug which causes vomiting and diarrhea.

Spooked by the outbreak which has quickly spread, Trinidad and Tobago's health ministry turned around the Caribbean Princess liner, which is making the 1,600-mile journey back to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The two-week trip carrying 3,000 holidaymakers and 1,100 crew departed American shores on February 2 before heading south to the popular tourist island.

Never had that problem. The last ship I was on was spotless the Norwegian Gem. They cleaned that ship all night every night. It was the best.

My wife and I have done many cruises yearly with friends, since the late 1960s.
Mostly the Caribbean, South America and the Mexican Rivera, in February to get away from the Boston winter for awhile. Never had a bad cruise.

My wife came down with Alzheimers about six years ago so flying is out- too complicated.

I have taken her to Bermuda from Boston to Bermuda in October, done 3 cruises the last 5 yeas to Bermuda, 3 years on the Norwegian Dawn and the last two on the Serenade of the Seas in October.

If we are up to it this October, I will give the Norwegian Gem cruise to Bermuda from Boston a try. -Tom

We cruised the Celebrity Summit four times to Bermuda from Bayonne and the Gem to the Bahamas. I misspoke about the cleanest ship it was the Dawn. We took that last summer to the Bahamas and Florida and Great Stirrup Cay.

Holland America around Patagonia was a great cruise. No rig rats running up and down the hallway. Great captain briefings, social events, buffets the full range.

We did some cruises about 8 to 10 years back. Great food, OK company, rather a rush at port. Not something we feel like doing again.

But, a scenic slow cruise around Patagonia, or for that matter, Alaska, is different.

That must have been fun!

Good for you.

My wife's bizarre behavior flying from Boston to San Juan and staying at a hotel prior to boarding the Summit for a Caribbean cruise, convinced me flying was out of the question for future cruises.
So now I stick with going Boston to Bermuda. -Tom

Probably the way we’ll do it next time. Just hope I don’t get the corona virus on the airplane.

Has anyone found any stats on how the cruise industry is being financially effected by these various illnesses?

There are 314 cruise ships around the world so it will take more virus disasters to have a big economic decline.
We will have to see how it plays out in 2020. -Tom

From cruise Market watch-
Total worldwide ocean cruise capacity at the end of 2018 will be 537,000 passengers and 314 ships.
Annualized total passengers carried worldwide will be 26.0 million (a 3.3% increase over 2017).

Very, very unlikely on a short/relatively short flight. Just wash your hands, don’t touch your eyes/mouth/etc. I’ve done all-inclusive probably 30 times in the last 14 years, definitely the way to go, at least if you drink alcohol and want free wifi (cruise ships wifi is nuts).

I would have second thoughts about working where you do. Sex in conference rooms? Must be interesting.

We have a mom's room for mom's who are nursing so they can pump milk.

They had to put a lock on the door and a digital sign in as the room was being used for "other purposes".

The quality of people we've hired is questionable at best.

“You can go on dozens of cruises and never catch it (norovirus),”

That’s us. Wash hands always - OCD. Use your own cabin bathroom if possible. Open public doors with forearms or back of hand. NEVER touch any part of your face inless hands are clean. Use strong hand sanitizer immediately before eating (after handling menu, pulling chair out and in, using buffet tongs, etc.).

It sounds complicated, but it isn’t because it becomes routine.

“cruise ships wifi is nuts”

Last week we were on Sky Princess with their new Medallion internet. It was wonderful - better than home - and totally stable and strong.

I meant cost, rather than reliability. The higher end cruise lines are more reasonable on wifi (or even free on some) but the cheaper cruise lines are nuts - at least last time I looked a couple years ago.

“I meant cost, rather than reliability.”

I’m not sure if it was a good cost deal or not since I’d never used it before. But for four devices (2 laptops & 2 smart phones), with 24/7 internet for a week, it was $104. It’s expensive, but family issues at home really didn’t leave us much of a choice.

Anyhow, we’ve pretty much concluded that we’ve taken our last cruise. They’re shrinking everything to make room for more revenue generating space. Shows are bad compared to former cruises. Health safety was shoddy, even in light of the corona-virus on a sister ship. Not thrilled. We shall see... Maybe will do the all-inclusive resort thing; it sounds more relaxing.
