Tom Steyer promises $22 minimum wage if elected president
Washington Examiner ^ | 2/10/20 | Tim Pearce

Billionaire activist and 2020 Democrat Tom Steyer pledged to push for a $22 minimum wage if he wins the White House in November.

Steyer made the pledge while campaigning in Winnsboro, South Carolina, on Sunday. His minimum wage standard is the highest so far of the Democratic presidential primary field.

The federal minimum wage has sat at $7.25 for the past decade. Washington, D.C., and 29 states have set higher standards, however.

Steyer’s wage floor is set much higher than what most politicians and activists are currently calling for. Former Vice President Joe Biden, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts have all released plans calling for a $15 minimum wage.

“Steyer proves ... dummy”

The Steyer panderfest is in full swing in SC...

He has a 30 second commercial on local TV where he is interacting and doing various staged things with various groups of people.

Out of maybe 50 total people that are the Steyer “props” in the spots, at least 3 or 4 are white, the rest not so much. And the libs talk badly about Conservative “dog whistle” messaging.

And never fear, Tommy is still wearing that stupid tartan tie and that goofy multi-colored belt throughout the commercial.

Stupid, and weird, at the same time. He must possess some type of lucky charm to have ever moved past a dead end minimum wage job.

As a contractor on government projects I paid those rates for many years. Every employee on those projects had to be paid the rates that match their job classification.

Certified payroll reports had to be filed every week or no payments would be made.

There are three issues which can be used by Republicans to counter minimum wage arguments.

(1) If companies were to get together and agree on a minimum wage, that would be called monopolistic collusion. The business owners would be facing jail time.

Having the government involved doesn't make the damage done to the free market any worse. In fact, the government simply sets the entry level wage and most businesses take advantage of it. Individual's talents and potential are discounted at the entry level. Nobody talks about the entry level employees who make much less than they are worth.

(2) As most people on this forum have noted, if $22 is Steyer's figure, then why not $23 or even $30? The answer is point (3) of this discussion.

(3) Minimum wage is a LIE! The real minimum wage is $0. This is because when the minimum wage is set above the market value of the people being employed, their jobs will disappear. Granted, there is some elasticity to the figure and some people currently employed are not worth what they are being paid. But that simply means that business costs are shifted and some workers make less than what they are worth and some businesses see less profit which pushes them closer to a decision to close their doors.

At $22/hour, I would expect to go into most restaurants and have lots of automated personnel outside the kitchen. Wendy’s “4 for $4” would have to be repriced at “4 for $40” to make that wage work.

Like I said those jobs are not given to unconnected general public. This MN state rigged work is so far off the normal way business is done. Why even post it?

It’ll be just like during FDR’s Depression. Lots of people out of work and businesses shut down.

So who would do the work then?

The point is that NOBODY does the work. Your corner restaurant simply disappears along with the jobs it supported.

Furthermore, new restaurants and business will never START, because the costs are too high.

Where did you get that 2% number? Where are your calculations?

There are three issues which can be used by Republicans to counter minimum wage arguments. ,

No, the first question is SHOULD Republican alienate workers by "countering" the minimum wage. Is that politically smart or savvy? The GOP should be trying to attract blue collar and workers in general. This issue is a litmus test.

Of course that means at McDonald’s there will be no humans waiting on you and a Big Mac will cost $14.00.

Tom Steyer is a massive MORON.

Are you going to pay for it...Tom Steyer?

Let me answer that...no you aren't. The American TAX PAYER will pay for that.

Not to mention driving businesses out of biz...

These Demo idiots...know nothing.

I am trained in economics. As I pointed out minimum wage is a LIE. $0 is the true minimum.

I refuse to LIE in order to garner votes. Better to inform the voters than pander to ignorance.
