An alarming graph shows how fast the Wuhan coronavirus has spread in the past two weeks alone and highlights how soon it could become a pandemic.
The bar graph was posted on Twitter by Cate Cadell, the China correspondent for Reuters, on Wednesday.
It shows that in the past three days the number of infections has risen sharply, as have the number of deaths and the number of countries discovering infected people.

It's not clear who made the graph, but the data on it is current. Cadell did not immediately respond to a request for clarification from Business Insider.
The pneumonia-like virus — also known as 2019-nCoV — was first discovered in the central Chinese city of Wuhan on December 31.

Actually that seems about right, as more people become infected the spreading rapidly accelerates.
But is it any more deadly than the flu?

In some ways yes. The Corona Virus causes pneumonia - which could easily be life threatening to anyone with COPD or those with susceptibility to Bronchitis, etc.
Wait until next week when the lunar new year holiday hits. It will be nuts.
What is the vertical axis? Single cases, x100 cases, x1000 cases?

The graph is no more “terrifying” for this virus than the flu, so far as deaths.

It’s not terrifying. At least not yet.
If you were doing a precursor to a bio weapon this is a fairly harmless map of distribution.
Influenza, at this point kills tens of thousands in the US every year. This has killed about 20.
How can we tell?
Most graphs in the media are terrible. At least they show some numbers, but as you point out, they are useless without showing the multiplier on the vertical axis.
Just like the last 5 “pandemics”. Get back to me when we have a real virus. *sigh*
Remember swine flu, bird flu, SARS, and ebola were all supposed to eleminate us by now. Just more media hysteria.
