[Note: article is about a year old].
At first glance, I thought the story was funny. But the more I thought about it ... it's actually not a bad option.

So, if a hotel chain can do that and make money, why not just do the same as a retiree-only place, for the same pricing?

Maybe many hotels doing this now? I think many in snowbird wintering areas by the water are.

Maybe re-purpose older hotels for this, as Co-ops.

It’s a good deal now, but when he needs a diaper change, who’s going to do it?

You can camp at state parks for about 6 bucks a night.

I’ve often joked that cruise ships make a good retirement home. On staff medical, activities person to keep you busy, janitorial. And rum drinks, so better than retirement homes.

When my father became ill, we suggested he stay at the Waldorf Astoria. It was cheaper than the hospice where he eventually wound up at.

“[Note: article is about a year old].”

Published here last year and discussed by me as being a recycled 14-year-old story.

We have a friend who was spending $4K a month ($48K a year) to stay at a VA Vets Home.
My wife and I spend about $58K a year for a mortgage/insurance/taxes, utilities, HOA fees, 2 vehicles including gas and maintenance and insurance, TV/Internet/Phones, groceries, entertainment, and miscellaneous spending cash - and we have 1600 sq feet home instead of a 350 sq ft room.

Of course, he could go to the dayroom and cafeteria to watch TV and eat....

And, if he signs up, he’s eligible for “frequent stayer” points. He can go on vacation at any Holiday Inn in the world and stay for free.

I traveled for a living for many years; retired a year ago, and I’m still staying in Holiday Inns gratis.

Mmmmm 64 seems a tad bit ‘youngish’ for a retirement home unless there are underlining physical limitations. My opinion is better to own your own paid for place and not be at the whim of an outside facility. What if Holiday Inn decides to change its policy on such arrangements? If this works for him then so be it. I’m still working at 63 and want to maintain healthy lifestyle and habits through the retirement years. Nothing is guaranteed in this life so there’s that. Save for retirement and get out of debt.

Reminds me of the lady who lives on a cruise ship a week at a time. She says the food’s better, the cabins are nice and there are a lot of people to talk with.

A friend in S.C. wrote that she has put her name on a list for a new senior assisted-living home that is being constructed. They want $3,000 a month for a one bedroom apartment. She’ll have to sell her house to be able to afford to live there. I think I’ll send her the link to this article. Maybe it will wake her up. I sure hope I die before I have to make a decision like that, or my kids have to.

This man has no idea of what goes on in a skilled nursing facility. Although, a hotel is not unlike assisted living. If you can get around and you are not demented, it’s not great...but....

No. I live in an assisted living residence. I need help with my meds.

I get three meals a day and I live in my own private apartment. Oh and did I mention its paid for by a Medicaid waiver?

Cheaper than living in a motel. Which for liability reasons won’t provide seniors help when they might need it.

I was thinking this was a smart guy until I realized what hotel life is really like - running, jumping yelling children, yelling parents, slamming doors, people playing their tv’s too loud, people having sex in the neighboring room, folks above you thumping around at all times of the day and night, loud celebrations that spill into the parking lot, noisy 18-wheelers pulling up at 2 a.m. running their diesel engines for another hour because they don’t want to allow you the peace and quiet to rest.

Maybe the cruise ships would be nicer but I imagine I would have that bobbing up and down motion for days.

Not that I want to be in a retirement home where some old hag decides which jell-o you’re going to gum today. I have to give this more thought.

Depending on the state, long term stays are tax exempt from sales and occupancy taxes.

And throw in free breakfast.
