For many Southern California music fans, the most anticipated moment of the new year is getting the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival line-up, but for nearly 120,000 music merchants, industry insiders and musicians, the annual NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Center is where the real excitement is.

The National Association of Music Merchants has gathered every January in Anaheim since 1976 to show off new innovations in the industry. With thousands of exhibitors from around the world, the NAMM Show is one of the longest-running and largest music product trade shows in the world.

This event is all business: The NAMM Show, held Jan. 16-19 this year, is for badge holders only. So while famous faces like Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga and Elton John have appeared there, the general public isn’t permitted to attend.

That said, there are ticketed events open to the public that provide a taste of what NAMM has to offer, such as .... The Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards, or TEC Awards ...will take place Jan. 18 and be hosted by comedian and musician Fred Armisen. The 2020 Hall of Fame inductees are recording engineer Dave Pensado and record industry veteran Herb Trawick of the weekly web series, “Pensado’s Place.” The Les Paul Innovation Award will be given to singer-songwriter and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Joni Mitchell.

“Like Les Paul, Joni Mitchell is a trailblazer who never shied away from taking creative risks as a songwriter, musician, producer and influencer,” NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond said via an email interview. “Or put more simply, anyone who can say, ‘Yeah, Jaco Pastorius was my bass player’ is more than deserving.”

Jaco Pastorius played on Pat Metheny’s first album, a trio-based group, that many say was his absolute best.

Oh yes, I'm very familiar with that album.

I pray she enjoys better health in future

She is a terrible chain smoker and her voice is so bad now. Love her music but she definitely doesn't live a healthy lifestyle.
