The medications that change who we are
BBC News ^ | January 8, 2020 | Zaria Gorvett

“Patient Five” was in his late 50s when a trip to the doctors changed his life.

He had diabetes, and he had signed up for a study to see if taking a “statin” – a kind of cholesterol-lowering drug – might help. So far, so normal.

But soon after he began the treatment, his wife began to notice a sinister transformation. A previously reasonable man, he became explosively angry and – out of nowhere – developed a tendency for road rage. During one memorable episode, he warned his family to keep away, lest he put them in hospital.

-snip-

Alarmed, the couple turned to the study’s organisers. “They were very hostile. They said that the two couldn’t possibly be related, that he needed to keep taking the medication, and that he should stay in the study,” says Golomb.

Ironically, by this point the patient was so cantankerous that he flatly ignored the doctors’ advice. “He swore roundly, stormed out of the office and stopped taking the drug immediately,” she says. Two weeks later, he had his personality back.

Others have not been so lucky. Over the years, Golomb has collected reports from patients across the United States – tales of broken marriages, destroyed careers, and a surprising number of men who have come unnervingly close to murdering their wives. In almost every case, the symptoms began when they started taking statins, then promptly returned to normal when they stopped; one man repeated this cycle five times before he realised what was going on.

Drugs can do wonderful things, but you really need to be careful in what you take. Doctors don’t know everything and will rely on you to inform them about issues. Get a second opinion.

And consider there may be perfectly safe alternatives to a drug through lifestyle, nutrient, or supplement methods available over-the-counter, identified through valid research.

“The medications that change who we are”

That is almost all meds..the question is do you really need to be taking 15-20 pills a day?

And if you do the supplements, many docs will say they aren’t “medically necessary”. BTDT

Statins make my joints hurt like the dickens.

[[Alarmed, the couple turned to the study’s organisers. “They were very hostile.]]

Well of course, they were taking statins too

[[tales of broken marriages, destroyed careers, and a surprising number of men who have come unnervingly close to murdering their wives. In almost every case, the symptoms began when they started taking statins, then promptly returned to normal when they stopped]]

Come on- this is all anecdotal evidence- We don’t know what hte variables were- did they happen to encounter stressful situations that they hadn’t before? Did they change their diet at all? Were they getting enough sleep? You could just as well make the claim that they chewed gum during their aggressive period,s but ‘quickly returned to normal’ once they quit chewing the gum- Or when they cut down on the coffee they consumed, or soda with caffeine, or ask whether they had quit smoking during these periods- or or or-

High blood pressure can cause anger issues and marriage problems- Stress certainly does cause problems- stimulants can too-

Where are the large scale controlled studies that these things were a direct result of the certain drug?

While it’s fine ot say that ‘There MAY be a connection”, and suggest further large scale controlled studies need to be done it’s kinda not very responsible to try to make a case that there IS a connection based on anecdotal evidences- Millions of people take statins and are fine (That’s not to say there couldn’t’ be an issue, but it’s pretty good long term proof that the drug is fairly safe)

Let me guess, anti medicine Scientology right?

This article is so full of BS as to be comical. Only nutwad would buy into this nonsense. Statins are about the most innocuous drug there is, to say the least.

"Statins make my joints hurt like the dickens."

Same here. I was taking generic Crestor for about 5 years and was primarily experiencing pain in my knees and shoulders which got worse over time. I quit taking them and within 2 weeks all of that pain was gone (along with nightmares and a general weak feeling I had the entire time I was on that drug).

My GP understood when I told him I quit taking the statin and now I take something called Repatha which is a bi-weekly injectible that works as good as the statins but without all of the side effects.

Statins are poison.

My doc tried to get me on them, I tried it ONCE.

It felt like a bad flu and didn’t go away for two days.

Poison.

Do whatever you must to control your blood fats and avoid these meds. Quite drinking. Exercise. Lose 40lbs. Eat right.

But never, ever take a statin.

I have no doubt Statins interfere with hormones and other neurotransmitters far more than scientific literature admits to.

Sorry, but you are wrong...

https://www.goodrx.com/blog/can-cholesterol-medication-cause-fuzzy-head/

Statins for most people, are generally innocuous, but you are ignorant if you think they do not have side effects, some of them very serious, in some people.

SSRI’s can cause homicidal, suicidal impulses in males teenaged/20’s. EVERY school shooter has been on this type of anti-depressant.

So you believe statins are an inherently more healthy way to live than from lifestyle changes providing the same effect?

So if you actually read the item you posted as a source you would see that the good doctor basically debunked the idiotic claims. It is NOT a factor in depression, suicide, very rare for any behavior changes and non existent for the rest.

Irritability and aggression. There have been case reports of patients developing severe irritability and aggression associated with the use of statins. This has been reported but it is rare.

Memory loss. Concerns have been raised about cognitive dysfunction and memory loss associated with statin use. However, a review of reports to the FDA up to 2002 found only 60 reports of patients who had memory loss associated with statins.

Sorry, but you believe statins are always innocuous you are a fool.

Statins also are known to lower testosterone which can have major cascading effects on men.

Get better informed and you will learn.

Statins have such across the board benefits that a few years ago the govt wanted to recommend that everyone take them whether they had cholesterol issues or not.

I favor lifestyle changes as the first therapy, but the erroneous conclusion that statins are dangerous is simply wrong and suggests an agenda since medicine already recognized their great usefulness.

And I won’t debate vaccines either. Stupid nonsense not worth my time.

Virtually all drugs have side effects.

The muscle wasting and joint problems from statins are real for some people. They also block your body from making Co-Q10, so you have to supplement just to be a bit safer under statins.
