I have IE 11 in both my PCs and am finding it increasingly difficult to use some websites . Even Facebook says that my browser will soon not be usable on that site . I don't want to install Windows 10 , so , to those who are still using Windows 7 , which browser do you recommend ? Any other advice ? Thanks in advance !

If you are like me, you should have a few old hard drives around. Get the hardware needed to use those old drives as an external drive and periodically back files up to them.

I do back up but Microsoft wrecking the operating system time and again is not something I want to use. At work we are using Office 365. Now everything is slow as our files are on Microsoft servers and there is a delay is everything along with Not responding message in Outlook from time to time. We have a 200mb connection but Microsoft is slow.

You are absolutely welcome, Might consider making a live CD or stick and give it a temporary test drive without installing it. And the installer if you decide to, will also give the option to install it as dual boot over windows if you like so that you can have both. Cool thing is, you can still go and access and manipulate your windows files drag and drop, copy and paste even when booted in the Linux. This makes it easy to transfer files from one to the other if you choose to actually install it at some point. :)

Never had a problem with Firefox, Vista (9 years), Win 7 (1 and a half years),Win8.1(About 5 years)and now Win 10 (2 months)Never use MS Browsers. Or Chrome.

Use these progs:
Ccleaner (piriform.com)Every day.
Superantispyware.com (Run every week)
Spybot Search and destroy.(This is #1!) Majorgeeks.com
(update and immunize on left and then on top every time there is an update until you get ALL zeros)Oh, but check for problems first time. (It makes no sense to immunize against problems you may already have!!)

Registry Life.Effen Russian Genius Guy.

Good Luck! Let me know how it goes, everybody. Check my join date. Learned everything here, I think.

Is Linux good for word processing?

Linux Mint comes with a full suite of word processing tools that do all the same work that all Windows systems do. I haven't yet tried it out because I don't do real work on this computer, but it's all there if I ever need it.

Best of all, it's all free!

You’re going to need to change operating systems if you want to stay online. End of support for Windows 7 is next week. No more updates, no more security fixes. Increased vulnerability to attacks. Either Windows 10, or one of the linux variants. Ubuntu is pretty windows-like, if you don’t use the command prompt all that much, and don’t have a heavy investment in Windows software.

If your hardware is pretty old, several of the lighter versions of Linux will still be fast enough for email and web browsing. If you use Photoshop, or Acrobat, or any of several of the high end graphics or CAD programs, you may need a new computer and Win10 just to keep going. Depends on what you want to do.

:Switch to Apple.”

Hardware is more expensive, they do the same thing with OS X that MS is doing with Windows, i.e., “Upgrading” it so it’s unrecognizable, and requiring the upgrade, and make the old versions die. Feel free, if that’s what you want, but I don’t buy ANYTHING from Apple anymore. I certainly won’t recommend it to anyone else.

“Expecting flames, but I don’t care.”

No flame, honest curiosity. What software that is in common use today will it run? I went the opposite direction back then, and own no OS/2 software.

“I decided in the ‘80s that CP/M was the superior Operating System.”

Yeah, me too. Didn’t work out so well. Maybe if I’d been a better programmer.

Started with a COSMAC Elf, then TRS-80 Model 1, Level 1, 4K, then C64, then H89/Z90, then a PC-compatible floppy system... Couldn’t afford CP/M-86, so MS-Dos. Was a time I actually liked Microsoft, long, long ago, and far, far away, in another universe.

“s Linux good for word processing? “

It’s OK if you’re not a user of the esoteric functions buried deep in the MS Word menus. If you are, you’ll likely hate it, but if you search hard enough, you may be able to find something that will do what you want.

You’re still going to have to learn SOMETHING new.

“Firefox - never had any problems with it with any version of Windows - “

It’s also run by flaming liberals. I like it, but I don’t use it anymore, as they’ve gotten too intrusive for my taste.

“I’m pretty sure I’ll never take the time to learn more about Linux, nor will I want to, or wish that I had.”

You tried the wrong one is all. I thought the very same two years ago. When you have the right one there is almost no “learning” to it at all. :)

You would not believe how many die hards have been pleasantly surprised when they finally ended up with the correct distro. :)

But I will leave it at that and not be a pain in the rear about it going forward. lol
