A recent survey of registered dietitians named the low-carbohydrate keto diet yet again as the most popular diet in the United States. Powering this diet is fat, and loads of it all the way up to a hefty 90 percent of ones daily calories.
Its fans (and marketers) feed social media with before and after photos, crediting the diet for life-altering weight loss or other effects. They swirl butter into their coffee, load up on cheese, and eat lonely burgers without its bestie, the bun. Staples like whole grains, legumes, fruit and starchy vegetables are being largely pushed off the plate as devotees strive for ketosis when the body begins to burn fat instead of glucose as its primary energy source.
America is in a state of carbophobia, said Whitney Linsenmeyer, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
The diet is hailed for dropping pounds, burning more calories, reducing hunger, managing diabetes, treating drug resistant epilepsy, improving blood pressure, and cholesterol, as well as triglycerides, the major storage form of fat in the body. People have reported improved concentration, too. We see pretty dramatic benefits, said Dr. William Yancy, director of the Duke Diet and Fitness Center.

You obviously haven’t researched things very well. LOTS of primitive peoples have had high fat diets, and done well on them. And everyone I know on keto is doing very well with it.
Oily stools? What planet do you live on?
Maybe easy for some. I luvs me some breakfast. I'll try that if I don't see the kind of results I think I should by cutting out 6-8 meals a week. I mean that has to do something even if it's only a few pounds a week. The hunger pangs are rough enough as it is on fasting days.
I'm thinking of it like I did when I quit nicotine. The body really craves it but then it passes for a while. Sometimes the cravings in the morning are almost unbearable but then the afternoon isn't nearly so bad. One would think they would get worse. Maybe that's just my belly adjusting to the lack of food. I'm also concerned about the body reducing the metabolism making it even harder to drop the weight.
This is only the first week on the IF so I guess I'll give a month to see if my body adjusts to this new regimen of intake and times with positive results. I sure hope so...
In other news; I just got a notice via email there a new keto brown sugar substitute for those who miss it.

Lol. Meat eaters are always happier than grazers. Have you ever known a grazer who didn’t. have a stick up their arrogant posterior?
I use Swerve Confectionary for all of my chocolate treats. Basically I use Hershey’s 100% Cacao (Dutched), Heavy Cream and Swerve, and you can make a lot of different things.
My favorite is a nice fat bomb, from adding in frozen avocado chunks.
You’ve written a great post full of actual, intelligent information and sources - instead of my rushed gibberish. Thank you so much and I am SO glad you are reading today :) <3 I hope your information brings attention to a great way to achieve better health.
I’ve been using Swerve for a long time too but it looks like there’s another product like it but cheaper on the market now too. I’m just the messenger but I think I’ll give it a try.
Just remember, Xylitol is fatal to dogs, so beware.
I loved the bread too. I loved it so much that I became an excellent bread baker - all kinds! Even sourdough. I could eat 4 slices at a time.
Once I started keto, it occurred to me that maybe it wasn’t the bread I was craving, but the butter. Bingo.
On those occasions, if you crave bread, eat it without butter or fat, and see if it is still as yummy. Your mileage may be different, of course.
Keto is a highly effective short-term protocol for weight loss/fat loss. Better to do it by focusing on getting adequate protein, & to go easy on added fat. i.e. don’t dump butter in your coffee. Get your fats primarily from whole-food sources. Don’t freak out about gluconeogenesis by skimping on protein. Protein is key. Beware of the grifters doling out keto advice... Much of it is bad.
Not the ones I have worked for; low carb all the way.
re: weight loss
Keep in mind a few things
It took you how many years to get where you are now? the reverse will not happen immediately and takes longer the older you are and if you are a woman.
Next, how many years did it take you to get where you are now? There is micro-damage in your body to your skeletal and muscular system as well as inflammation. Your body may be focused on repair right now and you will see a flat line in weight loss. Check your measurements. Are pants/shirts fitting looser?
Also, your body will resist because it thinks this change is short term and the status quo will return. Also, in weight loss your body will put water into the fat cells when it uses the fat in them. You will experience “whoosh” days.
Your doc means well but doesn’t understand the diet. You needed more sodium, magnesium, and potassium at the beginning of the diet. Your body excretes a lot of stored water and minerals. Studies have shown that healthy people actually need more salt than is recommended, in general.
Try again with extra salt, magnesium and potassium supplementation. Dehydration can cause these exact same symptoms, and you probably got dehydrated.
Potassium is the big one! Most Americans don’t get nearly enough Potassium in their diet.
Exactly my response. Low electrolytes.
On those occasions, if you crave bread, eat it without butter or fat, and see if it is still as yummy. Your mileage may be different, of course.
A semi-Keto diet has worked very well for my husband, including substantial weight loss, better A1C numbers and lower BP. I don’t see much change for me (I do like my wine at night, which may be the culprit). We have 3 Keto meals delivered every other week, which is helping us to know what we should be putting together for dinners. The main problem I have with those is the large amount of greens that are often included. I have even come around to accepting (even liking) the dreaded kale, but not a cup and a half of it plopped on my plate at one sitting.
It can be tough to find good choices for lunch. Green & veggie salads with chicken or tuna get tedious quickly, and don’t always travel well, and we end up throwing away pushed aside/spoiled food. But the other option is pretty much something in bread or a wrap. My part-time job often takes me to places with no access to a fridge or a way to heat up food, which is limiting as well. A nice thermos of soup made with bone broth is my best choice, but many times I’ll just chug a V-8 and eat cheese crackers (yes, I know!).
Being motivated isn’t the problem, it’s just tough to figure out what and how much to have, and how to stay out of the easy sandwich “rut”.
I have read that we need about 4,000 mg a day. I find that hard to believe for the following reasons.
Where do the Inuit get their 4K mg of potassium? They have no access to vegetables year-round. The Masai in Africa, ditto.
Research has shown that Vitam C and sugars/carbs compete for the same pathway. Carb eaters require a humongous amount of Vit C, and non carb eaters get along with very little, because it doesn’t have to fight to get absorbed.
So I wonder if there has been any clinical research on the keto diet and potassium requirements. I take a supplement - about 1k mg a day.
LOVE me some OT!!!!!
It's the only exercise I've ever actually enjoyed and looked forward to.
All true. I didn’t know about the water replacing fat in fat cells. That’s interesting. I’m a guy and I have noticed I can have swings in weight on a day to day basis that could be as much as 8 pounds. Usually when I use a can of no-bean chili to mix with pulled pork. I figured it was all the sodium in canned ‘anything’ so I retain water more after that.
I did notice a slight loosening of my jeans and I am aware of the flat line effect; especially when exercising because muscle builds and is heavier than fat.
Thanks for the info. :)
