One other idea that came to mind is someone has figured out how to do a version of seismographic surveys from the air.

That's a good possibility - there's been a lot of seismic activity particularly on the coast/ring of fire which generally translates to mid country a few days later-New Madrid. I did read something about aerial tracking, a few weeks ago—can't remember the details though.

Networked airborne sensors that can fly with precision due to GPS and controlled by small fast computers? Lots of applications possible, in my humble opinion.
