Boeing fires CEO Dennis Muilenburg, as the company struggles with 737 Max crisis

Chairman David Calhoun will become the manufacturer’s new CEO on Jan. 13. The transition period will allow him to exit his non-Boeing commitments. Board member Lawrence Kellner will become Boeing’s non-executive chairman of the board, effective immediately.

Boeing shares rose 2.5% in morning trading.

In addition to the Max problem, Boeing suffered a major embarrassment this weekend with its Starliner space capsule. Its autonomous flight control system fired at the wrong time shortly after launch, putting Starliner in the wrong orbit. A planned docking with the International Space Station to deliver supplies had to be aborted. The craft did safely return to Earth on Sunday.

There is a simple resolution to the MAAX problem. Get rid of the FADEC system and take control of the engines away from Pratt & Whitney and give engine control back to the pilots. Problem solved.

After all the problems that Airbus had with both defective A/S & AOA indicators and computer control, one would have thought Boeing wouldn’t go nearly as far as they did.

The Starliner mishap was a very minor error and the bulk of the mission’s objectives succeeded, but in that field, minor errors have major implications. This will get fixed by the next launch.

I would think Boeing having to build aircraft with no identified buyers and an unclear route to flight clearance is much more significant to the shareholders.

He should've been fired Day One, and he should stand trial for manslaughter.

It will take Boeing a decade to recover.
Maybe longer...

Saying that tells me you rally don’t understand the problem at all. This has nothing to do with the engine controls.

BTW, this is all part of keeping Google from performing a hostile take over of Boeing.

I think the design of the 737 Max is fundamentally flawed. You
can't make a silk purse out a sow’s year. When they stretched the 737 into a 737 Max, they changed its handling characteristics in a rather dramatic way. Using computer tricks to fix it is a complete kludge, and sketchy as hell.

Or implement it as well as Airbus has...

Aitlines want faedc so the a/c can be tied into Next Gen and pilots eliminated. Then all they’ll need is some remote control operators with a mouse and keyboard somewhere like Bangalore.

Keep it trimmed for flight and keep it in the donut. That’s pretty much all you need to succeed for enroute flight in any aircraft. That and talking on the radio.

Whatta Joke

Dave Calhoun is just a “good ol boy” and it was guys like him that screwed up Boeing - along the lines of McNerney and Connor.

Muilenberg is taking the hit because he’s an Engineer and the BizJerks don’t like it that one of the “technical people” got into the top rank. He had to take the heat for their decisions, and he was a bit too honest about it.

This patricide will mollify the Street a bit as it makes them look like they’re “doing something”, but it’s really without substance. It’s more about Calhoun takin’ care of his GE mafia buddies, a statement that anyone in the aviation biz will understand.

I think the design of the 737 Max is fundamentally flawed.

The design is fine. The effort to avoid certifying it as a new aircraft design is what botched things up. To have it "grandfathered-in" as a 737 meant that they had to hide the MCAS that was intended to prevent stalls from changing the engine position.

If considered a whole new airframe it would have taken longer to certify but everyone would have a transparent (hello MCAS) training program. They got sneaky and it killed people.

Intel made up “fraternization”charges against BK to get rid of him for covering up the 10nm process problems.
Rene James was simply kicked out for the same reason.
Both were the worst CEO in Intel’s history.
Too bad they got rid of so many good people in their quest for fame and glory.

Yep. Just disable the faulty system. Let the pilot rely on the tried and true “stick shaker” that shakes the control column when the aircraft is near stalling. When the stick shakes, it is the pilot’s decision about what to do; increase thrust or put the nose down a bit.

“will get fixed”?

The fixes for an orbital vehicle is FAR more complicated than a stupid (supposed) software glitch in the 737MAX aircraft... yet they still haven’t really gotten that worked out yet...
